Boomers own Beach Music. Those of us who lived in Virginia or the Carolinas, or those Boomers who may have vacationed in those spots in the late 50’s, the 60’s, and a little into the 70’s, remember Beach Music. We remember beach clubs and dance halls along the oceanfront at places like Cherry Grove, Ocean Drive, North Myrtle Beach and Surfside Beach in SC, or in Atlantic Beach or Carolina Beach in … [Read more...]

Expect Some Specks
By Dr. Julie Ball The fall weather is settling in, and the cool water saltwater species are becoming more active. Surf anglers are off to a great start with big red drum providing good action along the breakers on the Eastern Shore barrier islands. A few reds are also showing for surf anglers fishing from the Little Island pier and along the surf lines in Sandbridge, but the best of the drum … [Read more...]
Pileated Woodpeckers
My yard is a Mecca for woodpeckers. From the little Downy and Hairy woodpeckers, through the Red-Bellied and the Red-Headed woodpeckers, we have them all. We also have a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers regularly inspecting our tree trunks for juicy insects. Our house is about 50 years old, and many of the white maples in our yard were planted when the house was being built. Those trees are now in … [Read more...]
Sixty Minute Bread
I had owned my Oster Bread Making Machine for a couple weeks before I realized that it did not necessarily have to take 3 ½ hours to bake a 2-pound loaf of bread. Upon further review of the instructions, I read that the machine had an Express Mode that took only 58 minutes to bake a loaf of traditional white bread. “Probably sucks,” I thought. But what the heck, all it would cost would be 4 … [Read more...]
History of Broadus Wood
By Charles Crenshaw The Crenshaw family, the Dickerson family and the Seamonds family have a lot of history at Broadus Wood High School. Until 1906, there were three one-room schools near the village of Earlysville. They were Sandy Bottom, Longwood and Happy Hollow. My grandfather, Charles Crenshaw, attended Sandy Bottom. If there was farm work to be done, it came first, not school. It was … [Read more...]
Save The Date: Nov. 1
Throughout this year, and for nearly 100 years, the Charlottesville Municipal Band has provided free concerts and entertainment for the public. But last year, the Charlottesville City Council decided not to help fund the band, declining their support of what had been $50,000 per year. Losing that much revenue and continuing to operate is a daunting task, but the Band has shifted venues to save … [Read more...]
Night Time No-Nos
There are lots of things that are best done at night. Going to a drive-in movie is one. Frog gigging is another. And who wants to park on lover’s lane in broad daylight? Well, maybe when it’s cloudy, but definitely not in broad daylight. One thing that is best done when you can see what you’re doing is fishing. In fact, nighttime fishing is clearly advised against by the American Medical … [Read more...]
Nags Head Golf
Each winter there is a mass migration from Charlottesville and Central Virginia. No, it’s not birds flying south for the winter, it’s golfers, most on the way to Myrtle Beach. No arguing that Myrtle Beach is a great golf destination with something like 200 courses in the vicinity, but there is another southern destination with some nice courses, a gentle winter climate and plenty to do for either … [Read more...]
Life On a Pier
By Jim Brewer If by the grace of God, I am given a free and undeserved pass to heaven, I expect to meet St. Peter - not at the Pearly Gates - but on the entrance to a fishing pier and greeted this way. “Here is a Penn rod and reel, Jim. You can spend eternity on this pier and the fish are biting.” I am truly happy on a pier, most any pier, and it’s been that way since I was a child, … [Read more...]
