Smallies on the New
Tangent Outfitters says the fishing is “silly good” on the New River. Smallmouth are hitting hard, including some big ones. One client landed a 22-incher. The smallies are going for jerks, top waters, Senkos and tubes. Muskie are not being cooperative due to the heat, but action will pick up after the weather cools down. The waters are low, clear and in the mid 70s. The Upper New is super low … [Read more...]

Boomers Remember Jukeboxes
Anyone over the age of 50 knows first hand what a jukebox was. But ask a youngster today if he or she wants a nickel for the jukebox and you’ll get a blank stare. Yes, fellow Boomers, we are that old. Boomers and jukeboxes grew up together and some of us are here because of jukeboxes, which brought our moms and dads together. In restaurants, at dance halls, swimming pools, soda shops and … [Read more...]

“Chocolate” Chips
Is there anything better than a hot, gooey chocolate chip cookie fresh from the oven? If you are a golfer, yes, there is one “chip” that’s better, and that’s to knock a short shot from off the green to within tap-in distance of the hole. That’s not a chocolate chip. That’s a golden chip! Gretchen Scheuermann, Director of Golf and Head Pro at The Highlands Golf Park in Ruckersville, understands … [Read more...]
End Zone Pizza
We don’t eat a lot of pizza, not because we don’t want to, but because both Nancy and I gain weight when we order out or cook our own pizza. Pizza is not inherently fattening, except it tastes so good that one tends to eat more than one should. Ergo, weight gain. Every couple weeks, though, usually on a Sunday night, we order a pizza. I’m not big on those giant pizza franchises. They tend to … [Read more...]
Gnarly Cukes
We planted a dozen cucumber vines back in the spring, hoping for a crop large enough for my wife Nancy to be able to can some of her special pickles. Unfortunately, a groundhog had other ideas about the potential cucumber crop and single-handedly destroyed all but four vines. But the vines remaining did their best and ultimately delivered us about a half-bushel or so over a six-week span. They … [Read more...]
Cooking With Big Red
Sometimes it’s not the recipe nor the ingredients you use. Sometimes it’s the pot you cook in that gets great results. My go-to pot is a 6-quart, red porcelain enameled, cast iron covered Dutch oven by Tramontina. I love it. My daughter Laura –a great chef in her own right – gave me the “Big Red Pot” for Christmas. When I felt the weight of the package, I thought it was a bowling ball. It was … [Read more...]
Gardner’s Barbeque
Heading down I-95 on our way to Topsail Beach, NC, Nancy and I pulled off at the Dorches exit on Rt. 43 toward Rocky Mount. Our destination was Smith’s Red & White, one of the world’s great grocery stores. Smith’s packages many of their foods and vegetables and makes their own sausages and other delectable dishes. We loaded up with some groceries to take to the beach, then went next door to … [Read more...]
