It’s almost time to pick strawberries in Virginia, and Liberty Farms is getting ready with fields full of dark green strawberry plants filled with white blossoms. In a few weeks, they will open their farm to willing strawberry pickers, a chance to pluck delicious, red-ripe strawberries straight from the vines. On Saturday, May 26, Liberty Farms will host their annual Strawberry Fest. … [Read more...]
Beautiful Indigo Buntings
“Come quick! There is a new bird at the feeder!” When my wife Nancy spoke those words, I came-a runnin’. For us birders, there is nothing more exciting than to see a visitor in your back yard. Picking sunflower hearts from the feeder were two beautiful Indigo Buntings, the first I can ever remember seeing in our yard. They stayed for a while, then left, and I haven’t seen them since. I … [Read more...]
Saltwater Fish Arrive
Tautog, red drum, black drum, striped bass, flounder, trout and croaker are all available in Virginia waters now. The best flounder fishing is taking place in our seaside inlets. The tautogs are being caught on structure, near shore and in the lower Chesapeake Bay. Red drum are here and will be available throughout the lower bay for several weeks. Many anglers like to set up for them near … [Read more...]
Friendly Little Lewisburg
The smaller the town, the friendlier the people. I know from experience. I grew up in the small town of Lewisburg. I had moved from a larger town, Beckley, WV, at age 11, where I left Freddie Arnold, my super-close friend, behind. In Lewisburg, I would make many super-close friends. Immediately, everyone welcomed me with open arms. The very first weekend after I began classes in Lewisburg, … [Read more...]
Swannanoa Golf
Greg Lefler, Kevin Mann and I made our annual spring pilgrimage to Swannanoa this week with mixed feelings. Pete Lang, the owner and a long time golf icon in Central Virginia had passed away in December. Pete was 95 and quite active until last winter, when a stroke took its toll. Buddy Lang, Pete’s son, has taken over the reins of this laid-back, affordable and scenic course. You know, I’ve … [Read more...]
Abraham Lincoln Tomatoes
They say that May 10 is the time to plant tomatoes - with little or no chance for frost after then - so lots of tomato plants will be hitting the soil this weekend. If you have not yet selected your plants, and if they are available, consider a vine or two of Abraham Lincoln tomatoes. I stumbled across this hybrid variety a few years back. I was at Snow’s Garden Center and needed a couple … [Read more...]
Michie Tavern
One of Charlottesville’s most popular tourist destinations, right up there with Monticello, is Michie Tavern. Unquestionably Charlottesville’s oldest restaurant, Michie Tavern was established way back in 1784 by a Scottish Gentleman, William Michie. The Tavern was first sited in Earlysville, then moved near Monticello in 1927. At Michie Tavern, waiters and waitresses in period attire greet and … [Read more...]
The Do’s and Don’ts of Hawk Chasing
I had just put a handful of mealworms in the bowl near the bluebird house and stood back to watch the male fly to the feeder and secure a beak full of worms. Suddenly, a hawk swooped over the fence, talons stretched, heading for the bluebird. Fortunately, the hawk missed as the bluebird ducked quickly, but these bluebirds are like my children, only better behaved. Startled and extremely upset, I … [Read more...]
Shaved Beef Steak
I have stumbled across a neat product in the grocery store. It may have been around for a while, but I hadn’t noticed until a couple weeks ago. It is Beef Shaved Steak from a company called Old Neighborhood. The reason it caught my eye is that I just did an article on making Philly Cheese Steaks with SteakUms, a frozen meat product. The Old Neighborhood meat is boxed and shipped frozen, but the … [Read more...]
