(Field Sparrow carrying an insect to its young. Photo by Ken Mattison). By The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Watching birds eat from your bird feeder can be a true joy, but did you know that you could take your bird feeding and bird watching to the next level by growing native plants? Native plants will attract birds and support them by providing them the natural … [Read more...]
Charlottesville Power Equipment
I have an electric chainsaw because I never could get a gas saw to work when I needed it. With an electric saw, if your extension cord is long enough, just plug it in, squeeze the trigger and you can whack away. Last week a big pine limb dislodged and actually stuck vertically in the ground. My wife Nancy dictated that the branch be sawed and removed, which is fine, except the chain came off … [Read more...]
Lewisburg
(This will begin a series of articles about growing up in Lewisburg, West Virginia, perhaps the greatest town and in the best time to grow up that a young man could ever ask for.) I heard the dreaded news in February1955. My father was an FBI agent and had been transferred from Beckley, WV to Lewisburg, a small West Virginia town of about 2,000. Why in the world would Mr. Hoover … [Read more...]
Steak-umms for Philly Cheese Steaks
When I am at a fair or outdoor expo, one of the things I most enjoy is the food – especially Philly Cheese Steaks. Since they are not encouraged on my current diet, they are a special treat. The tastes blend perfectly – steak, cheese, onions, peppers and fresh bread. I made the mistake of thinking about Philly Cheese Steaks the other day and I was doomed. It’s like thinking about eating Chinese … [Read more...]
Road Trip To Southern States
This was a road trip I have looked forward to for several months. The temperature was 65 degrees, it was warm and sunny and my garden had dried out enough from the rain and snow that I could plant – and it was my day off. I hopped in my Jeep and headed north on Rt. 29 to Southern States. It wasn’t a very long road trip, just 3 miles, but it was a necessary trip before planted my garden. I … [Read more...]
The Five-Foot Putt
(Ed. Note: I played two rounds last weekend and hit the ball decently, but I couldn’t putt for – well, you know what. So I dug this old article out of the archives to re-read and hopefully apply to my putting game. I hope it helps. I need it.) Will miracles never cease? You’re on the green in regulation with a five-foot putt left to win the hole and take the match. There’s a … [Read more...]

Ants: All You Can Eat Buffet
Last weekend in Charlotte while playing golf, I noticed an extraordinary number of birds feeding along the concrete cart paths. Upon closer inspection, I discovered the reason. Ants. The little fellows were out in force and the birds were taking advantage. What ants lack in size, as far as a meal is concerned, they make up for by numbers and quality. Ants have more bang for the buck than almost … [Read more...]
Big Bass at Anna
Lots of big bass are now coming to the scales at Lake Anna, including a 9-10 bucket mouth caught by James Maupin. Big bass are taking crankbaits, spinnerbaits, plastic worms and topwater baits. Secondary points in the creeks are still producing a few good fish, with the best areas being from the Route 208 Bridge down lake. Crappie are biting well around shallow beaver lodges, submerged brush and … [Read more...]
Charley The Tuna
So, what has been happening out on the water so far? In addition to the great bluefin fishing out of Oregon Inlet, both yellowfin tuna and some bigeye tuna have been caught. Blackfin tuna are being caught out of Hatteras. As early as late January, big red drum were being caught out of the Hatteras surf during that early spring we had. Typically, about 2 weeks after that bite starts, we get them … [Read more...]
