I’ve never been to the Mediterranean, but I have eaten some of their exquisite foods. Last week, in fact, we dined at Smyrna Restaurant on West Main Street which specializes in Mediterranean-Aegean dishes. It was outstanding.
The service, first of all, was impeccable. Our server carefully explained the menu and made recommendations. His suggestions were spot on. Our water glasses were kept filled and we lacked for nothing.
Smyrna, by the way, was an ancient city in Turkey. Now called Izmir, it is the home to Orhun Dikmen, the General Manager.
The tastes and foods are tantalizing.
For starters, we ordered the Meze Trio – charred eggplant, yogurt-goat cheese dip, seasonal hummus and dipped in their fresh bread loaves. I had Fried Calamari as an appetizer and it was enough for an entrée and cooked perfectly. Nancy ordered a Seafood Dish – Fisherman Guvec with fennel, shellfish, red snapper, saffron broth. We were tempted to order the Bone-in Rib-eye Steak for Two which has received rave reviews, but I went with Lamb Skewers which I never get. For dessert, we shared a Baked Pastry with Ice Cream. Everything was excellent. I highly recommend it.
Smyrna is located at 707 West Main Street. Reservations are essential. Call them at (434) 956-4250 or go to smyrnacville.com and enjoy a delicious taste of the Mediterranean.
