(Juvenile Northern Black Racer, photo by John White) Here’s a comforting thought. It’s baby snake season. The little slithery guys are out there in large numbers, waiting for an opportunity to scare the bejeezus out of approximately half the human population. I don’t mind snakes, as long as I can see them. It’s the ones I don’t see that cause concern. D. … [Read more...]
Shrimp Boats are A’Coming
North and South Carolina are known for their shrimp industry, but many are unaware that Virginia waters also hold the tasty decapod crustaceans. Folks at the Virginia Beach Fishing Center say there has been an increased interest in fishing parties for shrimp. Personnel at the Center say that Virginia has always had some shrimp. For the last few years, however, there have been eating-size shrimp … [Read more...]
Bonanza In Living Color
The modern generation is accustomed to innovation. In recent years, they have seen voice-activated television sets, we have cars that run on batteries, transplant surgeries that take less than an hour, drone delivered packages and a phone - small enough for a shirt pocket - that will take videos, guide travelers, spit out data like a water fountain and – yes – it’s a phone. For our generation, … [Read more...]
In the Shallow
There is a great song out now called “Shallow” performed by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in the movie, “A Star is Born.” As the lyrics go, “We’re far from the shallow, now.” In Myrtle Beach last weekend and overlooking the ocean from our 6thfloor condo, I might advise fellow fishermen not to go too far from the shallow, now. In the shallows are lots of fish. The waves were … [Read more...]
Flying Dragons
Sitting on the back patio last week, I saw four dragonflies buzzing across the lawn. Since then, I have noticed dragon flies seemingly everywhere. Maybe they’ve been there all along and I didn’t notice them, or maybe it’s just been a really good year for dragonflies. Whatever the reason, they are interesting creatures. I watched one dragonfly intently. He hovered like a tiny black … [Read more...]
The Trouble With Myrtle Beach
Every spring, thousands of golfers from Virginia emerge from hibernation and head for Myrtle Beach, which boasts much warmer weather and wall-to-wall golf courses. But there is one problem. You can’t get there from here, at least by normal means of transportation. If you go to Virginia Beach, it’s Interstate all the way. If you go to Nags Head, you go on four-lane highways. If you … [Read more...]
Beware of Yellow Jackets
Louisa’s Sherman Shifflett says to beware of yellow jackets. They’re everywhere. “I talked to a friend tonight in Louisa who has been hunting for many years,” Sherman said. “ He said he has seen more yellow jackets in the woods this year than ever. Workdays at the hunt clubs have been difficult. In addition to the hot weather, we have also been plagued with yellow jackets and Japanese … [Read more...]
Pineapple-Coconut Pie
Desserts don’t have to be complicated to be good. This recipe for Pineapple-Coconut Pie from the Rappahannock Electric Co-Op newsletter is a case in point. Vivian Vance, now deceased, is given credit for it. Nancy Riggs of Hanover County won a Blue Ribbon at the Virginia State Fair baking this pie. She got the recipe from The Smokehouse Cookbook by the K.S. Club from Louisa. All who have sampled … [Read more...]
Lighting Solutions From Nancy B
By Nancy B Many of our clients feel they are presented with a challenge when they want to do away with a recessed can in their ceiling. They want to cover up the recessed fixture without removing it. Maybe it’s not in the correct place or doesn’t offer enough light. Or perhaps, they want to hang a pendant in place of the recessed light. This is no challenge for the folks at Nancy B’s. … [Read more...]
It’s Spot On in the York
The spot bite is on in the York and other Virginia tidal tributaries. This is the time of the year for the “yellow bellies”, the big fat spot that find blood worms irresistible. Spot, a member of the drum family, are so named because of the distinct black spot behind each gill. The short-lived fish feed voraciously as fall approaches and now is the time to go spot fishing. Spot, by the way, make … [Read more...]
