Tuna fish hit the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center docks on Wednesday, enough for a huge tuna fish salad. Multiple boats brought in yellowfin and some blackfin tuna. There were also several wahoo and dolphin reported and some limits of tilefish. Kayla Clark, Daniel Crosby, Patrick Healy, and Travis Spring had sailfish releases. Near-Shore anglers had a great day, bringing in good numbers of Spanish, … [Read more...]

My Transistor Radio
A defining moment in the lives of many Boomers came in October 1954 when Texas Instruments and a company called the Regency Division of I.D.E.A. combined to offer the first production model of the transistor radio. No longer would be young people be tied to a plug-in radio in the den or a manually tuned radio in the car to listen to their favorite rock and roll songs. Now, with a smaller, portable … [Read more...]

Common Sense Golf Etiquette
By Ron Granitz Why is it that common sense seemingly flies out the window when you play golf somewhere other than your home course and sometimes even on your home course? It’s amazing how some people go brain dead when playing golf just because they paid their money and feel the course is now an open book for all the stupid thoughts, words and deeds they can muster. As I recall, we had our first Bloody Mary before we got to Richmond and had deplenished our entire bottle of … [Read more...]

These alien peaches are as hard as rocks and tasteless. But now, fellow peach aficionados, our time has come. The white peaches are in season and many local and regional orchards are bringing them to … [Read more...]
A Few More Bluebirds
There are now a few more bluebirds gracing our neighborhood than before. Our resident pair managed to raise a family despite the sweltering days of late July and early August and the young ones have fledged. Unlike previous bluebird families that used our bluebird box, this family stayed in the yard for several days after the chicks fledged, taking advantage of the free meal worms I put in … [Read more...]

Sailfish On the Piers
No need to charter a boat and motor 30 miles to the Gulf Stream to catch a sailfish. In Nags Head, the water is so warm this week in the surf that several sailfish, though small, were caught off the piers. Southeast breezes raised the water tempearture to the upper 70’s, according to TW’s Tackle in Nags Head. Here is their report: Surf: Spot, Sea Mullet, Pompano and Flounder and Bluefish … [Read more...]
