By Sherman Shifflett A couple of years back, Jade Lourenco and Debbie Wollett, the co-owners of Obrigado's Restaurant in Louisa, decided to open a pie shop next to their restaurant on Main Street. Jade and Debbie had worked together at Tanyard Country Club prior to opening the restaurant and pie shop. Selecting an appropriate name for their shop was important. They considered … [Read more...]
Common Sense Golf Etiquette
By Ron Granitz Why is it that common sense seemingly flies out the window when you play golf somewhere other than your home course and sometimes even on your home course? It’s amazing how some people go brain dead when playing golf just because they paid their money and feel the course is now an open book for all the stupid thoughts, words and deeds they can muster. I guess the … [Read more...]
A Garden Full of Fish
On a December morning many years ago – I suppose it was around the time Richard Nixon was suggesting that 18 or 20 minutes be erased from his Presidential tapes - a half dozen of us rose before dawn to drive and meet a charter captain at Callao for a fishing trip on the Chesapeake Bay. As I recall, we had our first Bloody Mary before we got to Richmond and had deplenished our entire bottle of … [Read more...]
In White Peach Heaven
For 11 months a year, we are forced to buy fresh peaches that are anything but. They are likely imports from Mexico or South America that were picked months in advance and stored in cold lockers. These alien peaches are as hard as rocks and tasteless. But now, fellow peach aficionados, our time has come. The white peaches are in season and many local and regional orchards are bringing them to … [Read more...]
A Few More Bluebirds
There are now a few more bluebirds gracing our neighborhood than before. Our resident pair managed to raise a family despite the sweltering days of late July and early August and the young ones have fledged. Unlike previous bluebird families that used our bluebird box, this family stayed in the yard for several days after the chicks fledged, taking advantage of the free meal worms I put in … [Read more...]

Summertime Trout
South River Flyshop in Waynesboro says that despite the heat, the trout bite has been steady on the South River thanks to the feeding springs and recent rains. Terrestrials are the middle of the day go-to flies with the Fat Albert, Eric's Clodhopper, Arlienator Ant and Tony's Love Bug beetle … [Read more...]

Lake Orange Bite Is On
Contributed by Darrell Kennedy of Angler's Landing (540.672.3997) The water is clear and in the upper 80's. Largemouth are hitting soft plastics and live bait. This week, with cooling temps, the big bite has been on for bass, crappie and catfish. Even a few walleyes have been caught this week. Most of the action is still on the upper end of the lake in 8 to 15 foot depths. Potomac … [Read more...]
