By Capt. Alan Caine This winter on the Cape Fear Coast has been mild with most days over 60 degrees. The downside is that it has been a windy year, which makes fishing tough. The water is crystal clear, offering great sight fishing opportunities with fly or light tackle. However, most redfish this winter have been on the smaller side. Redfish grow quickly in their early years, so … [Read more...]
Sonny Bryan’s Texas Smokehouse
On a recent trip to Dallas for the Lighting Show, Nancy and I decided to spend one evening out to see what this Texas barbeque is all about. I have seen numerous Texas restaurants on the Food and Travel Channels and we wanted to eat at a tried-and-true barbeque joint. We asked around and decided on Sonny Bryan’s Smokehouse. With seven restaurants in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, they came highly … [Read more...]
Beat the Winter Doldrums with Jimmy O
So, it’s winter. Two more months of gloom and doom and Mother Nature threatening a couple feet of snow at a moment’s notice. Days are short, nights are long and there is only one thing we can do about it. Let’s party. Let’s track down Jimmy O at one of his many venues, drink a glass of wine or two and enjoy this amazing entertainer and his music for the ages. Endangered music, he calls it. … [Read more...]
Eat Breakfast, Lose Weight
I believe that all calories are not created equal. In my experience, caloric intake in the morning is a good thing, while pigging out at dinner and dessert is anything but a losing proposition. As mentioned before, I weigh every morning and the scales reveal my sins or virtues from the previous day’s meals. I am in the midst of a struggle to shed a few of those “holiday pounds” from … [Read more...]
A Flock of Snowbirds
Funny, but I usually don’t see my small flock of snowbirds until it actually snows. Then they show up, about 8 or 9 birds. Cold weather seems to draw them to our feeders, though I have never seen a snowbird (a dark eyed junco) actually at the feeder, but always on the ground. Sparrows are the same way, preferring to scratch and forage with both feet, like a chicken. Because of that behavior, I … [Read more...]
Cereal Boxes and Prizes
I poured myself a bowl of cereal the other day and immediately turned the box around to read the back cover. Instead of a puzzle, a game or the adventures of some cartoon character, I read only about fiber, saturated fats, calories, various vitamins, niacins, calciums and sugar content. According to the backs of modern boxes, cereals today are heart-healthy, gluten free, whole grain, nutrient … [Read more...]
A Hatch To Remember
(A Jim Brewer article from Virginia Outdoor Weekly, May13, 1994) If you hit it just right, there is a hatch of Green Drakes on the Shavers Fork in West Virginia so prolific that nothing else compares. I hit it once while fishing with my good buddy Dave Gladwell. Every trout in the river was feeding in the surface. Squadron after squadron of big, fat mayflies attacked the water. … [Read more...]
News From the Dallas Lighting Show
By Nancy Brewer The Dallas Lighting Market, now known as Lightovations, was buzzing with excitement and beautiful lighting. Orbs are still most popular and the color du jour is white. Bubbles of clear glass (small balls) hang on chandeliers and table lamps alike impersonating the orbs but on a much smaller scale. Beads and shells in all colors and shapes decorate hanging fixtures for … [Read more...]
Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen
Dallas is a little far for a Central Virginian to travel for a dinner out, but if you did, you wouldn’t regret it if the restaurant was Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen. Each January, Nancy and I attend the Lighting Show at the Dallas Trade Mart (see the article below), and each year, we “Uber” our way out to Pappadeaux for what is always a wonderful dining experience. Pappadeaux is based in … [Read more...]
Delicious Silver Corvina
Fish is probably the healthiest food we eat. Tastes good, too. I enjoy salmon, tuna, swordfish, catfish – most any fish, really. About a month ago, I had fish on my evening menu plans, but wasn’t sure what kind. When in doubt, see what looks good. What looked good to me was a fish called Silver Corvina. It was a white, fleshy fish – it looked sort of like a rockfish fillet, or maybe a speckled … [Read more...]
