By Nancy Brewer While in Dallas for the Lighting Market earlier this month, I was delighted to have the opportunity to meet Donny Osmond. We all remember Donny and his sister singing their hearts out on the Osmond’s show. Well, now that Donny is all grown up, he is now working in lighting, my field of expertise. The Donny Osmond Home Collection by Capital Lighting … [Read more...]
Cooking With Parchment paper
Some cooks are slow learners. Take me, for example. I go through cans of Pam like cotton candy at a carnival, trying to coerce my culinary concoctions to avoid sticking to the pots and pans. Sometimes they stick and sometimes they don’t, but even if cookies – for example- fail to cling to the baking sheet, the Pam residue leaves a sticky mess when it’s time to scrub down the dishes. Recently I … [Read more...]
A Time To Sew
As readers of CvilleBuzz well know, I love to fiddle in the backyard with my small vegetable garden. I find it to be almost a spiritual endeavor. To sew a tiny seed, seemingly dead, into the moist earth and watch it come to life, pushing its way through the heavy dirt in search of sunlight is simply amazing to me. Any actual plants or fruits of my gardening labor are incidental. I just love to … [Read more...]
The Perils of First Grade
Digging deeply into the memories of childhood, this Boomer shudders at the thought of the early years of school, namely kindergarten and first grade. How I survived remains a mystery. In the 1950’s, there was no pre-kindergarten, in fact, kindergarten was optional. I remember it as a waste of about 5 hours a day. The teacher read silly stories and we spent much of our waking hours (yes, there … [Read more...]
Tautog Action
Dr. Ken Neill, III In Virginia saltwater, tautog are the main target. Some nice catches are being made on the coastal wrecks. The water is still warm enough that even the inshore wrecks are still holding a lot of sea bass that you have to weed through to get to the tautog. The coastal striped bass fishery has not developed. There is some catch-and-release action inside of the bay. … [Read more...]
Sight Fishing in Carolina
By Capt. Alan Caine This winter on the Cape Fear Coast has been mild with most days over 60 degrees. The downside is that it has been a windy year, which makes fishing tough. The water is crystal clear, offering great sight fishing opportunities with fly or light tackle. However, most redfish this winter have been on the smaller side. Redfish grow quickly in their early years, so … [Read more...]
Sonny Bryan’s Texas Smokehouse
On a recent trip to Dallas for the Lighting Show, Nancy and I decided to spend one evening out to see what this Texas barbeque is all about. I have seen numerous Texas restaurants on the Food and Travel Channels and we wanted to eat at a tried-and-true barbeque joint. We asked around and decided on Sonny Bryan’s Smokehouse. With seven restaurants in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, they came highly … [Read more...]
Beat the Winter Doldrums with Jimmy O
So, it’s winter. Two more months of gloom and doom and Mother Nature threatening a couple feet of snow at a moment’s notice. Days are short, nights are long and there is only one thing we can do about it. Let’s party. Let’s track down Jimmy O at one of his many venues, drink a glass of wine or two and enjoy this amazing entertainer and his music for the ages. Endangered music, he calls it. … [Read more...]
Eat Breakfast, Lose Weight
I believe that all calories are not created equal. In my experience, caloric intake in the morning is a good thing, while pigging out at dinner and dessert is anything but a losing proposition. As mentioned before, I weigh every morning and the scales reveal my sins or virtues from the previous day’s meals. I am in the midst of a struggle to shed a few of those “holiday pounds” from … [Read more...]
A Flock of Snowbirds
Funny, but I usually don’t see my small flock of snowbirds until it actually snows. Then they show up, about 8 or 9 birds. Cold weather seems to draw them to our feeders, though I have never seen a snowbird (a dark eyed junco) actually at the feeder, but always on the ground. Sparrows are the same way, preferring to scratch and forage with both feet, like a chicken. Because of that behavior, I … [Read more...]
