(This issue of CvilleBuzz will be devoted to a fall getaway on the Outer Banks – everything from how to get there to what to do and where to eat.) It’s finally fall. The heat and humidity of August has lifted, the skies are blue and there is a slight morning nip in the air. Let’s celebrate fall’s arrival. Let’s take a trip to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The Outer Banks is a … [Read more...]
How To Get There
The best way to get to the Outer Banks is to hop in a twin engine Cessna at the Charlottesville Albemarle Regional Airport and touch down in Manteo about 45 minutes later. The next best way is to avoid I-64 from Richmond to Hampton Roads and take Rt. 460 from Petersburg to Sussex, then over to Great Bridge. It takes maybe a little longer – depending on traffic - but you don’t have to contend with … [Read more...]
Fishing On The Outer Banks
The best thing to do on the Outer Banks, particularly at Nags Head, is to pull up a lawn chair beside the sound, pour a glass of white wine and watch the sunset. Each one is spectacular. The next best thing is to open the curtains on your ocean side room and watch the sunrise. Those two events make the 5-hour drive from Central Virginia worthwhile, but there are lots of other things to do and one … [Read more...]
Other Things To Do
The Outer Banks is pirate country and the site of the Lost Colony. Thus, there is lots of history and places to visit and a trip to the NC Aquarium at Manteo is always a family favorite. The aquarium tanks hold hundreds of species of fresh and saltwater fish – plus a fan favorite, a pair of frolicking otters. It’s a nice place to visit on a rainy day. The historic town of Manteo is another popular … [Read more...]
Golfin’ The Outer Banks
Every golfer is aware of the hundreds of courses and opportunities to swing a club at Myrtle Beach. But closer to home and with weather almost as nice as the Grand Strand is Nags Head and the Outer Banks. There are some very nice courses available. The Pointe, for example, is just north of the Wright Memorial Beach along US Hwy 158 crossing onto the Outer Banks. Another 10 miles up the … [Read more...]
Where To Eat
Sometimes the best place to eat at Nags Head is in the kitchen of your rental cottage if you have had a little luck in the fishing or crabbing department. Last year, with some fresh trout and red drum filets caught aboard Capt. Stecher’s boat, Nancy and I enjoyed some of the best home-cooked Catch of The Day Fish Sandwiches I’ve ever had. But we also like to eat out and there are so many great … [Read more...]
Outer Banks Memories
I have been going to North Carolina beaches since I was a young boy – 6 or 7. My family had a small cottage at Morehead City and we spent many a day sunning and fishing at Atlantic Beach. I was in college when I made my first visit to Nags Head and I wasn’t impressed. The ocean waves weren’t nearly as spectacular as I remembered those at Atlantic Beach and the wind blew so hard that it sent … [Read more...]
Outer Banks Fishing Report
On Thursday, there were sea mullet and bluefish scattered along the beaches. Pompano were beached at Ramp 48 and a couple of nice drum were caught in Buxton. Frisco anglers put trout in their coolers. Sea mullet were scattered on the beaches from Kitty Hawk to the Inlet. Rough seas have made surf fishing challenging the last few days. The Little Bridge on the Nags Head/Manteo causeway reported … [Read more...]
1956 – A Very Good Year
We had lived in Lewisburg, WV for a year and by now I was becoming acclimated to the friendly little city. I had made lots of friends, I shot my first quail with a .410 shotgun and was fortunate to be young and alive in one of the greatest years of all time – 1956. In 1956, things didn’t cost much. The average price for a new house was $11,700, the average monthly rent was $88, a gallon of gas … [Read more...]
Remembering a Blue Ridge Mountain Father
Frequent CvilleBuzz writer and contributor, Sherman Shifflett, remembers a lifetime of tales and witticisms told by his father, George “Harvey” Shifflett. Sherman decided to write them down as he recalled them. He continued writing until all those the memories turned into a great book – “Remembering a Blue Ridge Mountain Father”. In the newly released paperback edition, Sherman recalls his … [Read more...]
