By Nancy B We often have clients at Nancy B's House of Lights who are proud “Baby Boomers”. Since I am one myself, I completely understand the need for more light. We also have clients who have invited their parents to move in with them rather than to assisted living locations and they come to us with the question of “How do we offer more light for our aging parents?” Let’s face it, inviting … [Read more...]
Tautog and Drum
As water temperatures rise, Virginia’s tautog bite is picking up. The water temperature is now up to 49.1 degrees at Thimbles Shoals. Ocean wrecks usually produce first, but now the bite has moved into the bay. Look for ‘togs anywhere there’s structure. Popular areas include the CBBT, Back River Reef, the Cell, Tower Reef, the Concrete Ships, Cape Henry Wreck, the Santore, the Winthrop, and the … [Read more...]
Rivanna River Giant
There have been walleye roaming the Rivanna River for years. As many as 20 years ago, the Game Department stocked walleye in the Rivanna Reservoir hoping that species would become established. They never really did. In fact, walleye have a tendency to go downstream and many of them went over the dam. There was once a pretty good fishery for walleyes below the dam as they tried to make … [Read more...]
What Did You Say?
If you live long enough, two things will happen. First, you’ll get arthritis as old joints begin to wear out. It’s like an automobile engine at 250,000 miles when it’s metal on metal, but in our case, it’s bone on bone. The second thing that will happen is that your hearing will also begin to diminish. Either that or it’s that other people all begin to mumble at exactly the same time. Ears have … [Read more...]
Let The Beatings Begin
There’s a great t-shirt on the market with a pirate ship in the background and this slogan: “The beatings will stop when morale improves.” In my backyard, the beatings have just begun. The robins are at war. Robins often travel in flocks, seeking productive feeding areas and better climate, but come spring, the only friend a robin has is his mate. Generally, in and around our yard, there … [Read more...]
Creasy Greens Update
Bet you thought I wouldn’t write any more about creasy greens, but you would be wrong. I’m sure hundreds and hundreds are out there dying for a creasy greens update, so here it is. The creasy greens saga began last spring. My wife Nancy had received a large bag of creasy greens seeds from her cousin, Billy, as he remembered his father and Nancy’s mother cutting and eating the succulent greens … [Read more...]
Easy, Peasy Hot Dog Chili
About once a month I get a craving for hot dogs. Some of the best hot dogs in town come off of the grill in my back yard, assuming I have homemade chili on hand. There are a few decent canned and packaged chilis available in stores, but none really do a hot dog justice. Last week, the hot dog fever hit me again and I picked up a pack of all-meat Ball Parks and some Wonder Bread … [Read more...]
Those Smelly Cubans
Each year for Christmas, I always put cigars at the top of my list. If I’ve been particularly good that year, my kids usually spring for a pack or two and they are always good cigars, not like the cheap stogies I normally buy. This past Christmas, my daughter Laura came through with a 4-pack of Cubans. They were specially packaged and looked great. I horde cigars like that, waiting for a … [Read more...]

Jason’s Deli
There was a time in Charlottesville where the only place you could order a sandwich or sub was at a diner. There were no sub shops or deli’s in in town. Now there is one on every corner and in every strip mall. Lots are good, some not so much. When Jersey’ Joe’s opened at Forest Lakes, Nancy and I tried it out. We had seen it on the food channel. We were deeply disappointed. The … [Read more...]
