Winter on the Chick

December 17, 2015 by Jim Brewer

The late Don Arthur was a fishing guide on the Chickahominy Lake. A heart attack knocked him out of the corporate world but didn’t prevent him from slipping into his oversized jon boat for a day on the lake. Don kept meticulous records – he could tell you every fish he ever caught and when. There was never a question about what bait or lure he caught the fish on. It was always live bait – … [Read more...]

Trophy of a Lifetime

December 17, 2015 by Jim Brewer

For a deer hunter, sometimes it takes a lifetime to finally bag the buck of your dreams. In the case of Otto Sherwood, it took 93 years. That was Otto’s age when he dropped this trophy deer on December 12th in Louisa County. The buck scored 181 5/8, a genuine trophy animal. Most of us are just hoping to make it to 93 years. For Otto, it was well worth the wait. Who knows what he’ll bag when he … [Read more...]

December 17, 2015 by Jim Brewer

It’s not quite winter yet, but I’m already thinking about spring. One spring event I’ve already penciled in on my calendar is the South River Fly Fishing expedition. Here is the press release. Destination Downtown Waynesboro (Waynesboro Downtown Development, Inc.) is pleased to announce the 1st annual South River Fly Fishing Expo. The event will be held on April 23-24th, 2016 on the banks of … [Read more...]

Roasted Radishes

December 17, 2015 by Jim Brewer

One of the hardest parts of the daily duties of being a home chef is not preparing the main course or even the dessert. It’s what to do with the vegetables. We get in a rut, or at least I do: green beans, broccoli, brussel sprouts, tossed salad, zucchini, lima beans, and then repeat. My daughter Laura introduced me to one of her go-to veggies – roasted radishes. It’s a colorful, tasty and … [Read more...]

The Glory of the Lord

December 17, 2015 by Jim Brewer

(Part II of a IV Part story: While Shepherds Watched) Amos, a young shepherd from Judaea was guarding the gate of the sheepfold while his father, Benjamin, and Shimron, his uncle, slept. The three shepherds had 98 sheep in their flock, intended to be sold as sacrificial lambs to the worshippers in the temple in Jerusalem at Passover. There were two other smaller flocks in the fold with their … [Read more...]

Remembering the Dime Stores

December 17, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Among the fastest growing segments of all the retail stores are “the dollar stores” – Dollar General, for example. Folks like the idea of buying stuff for a buck and they are flocking to dollar stores throughout the country. Boomers, however, remember the dime stores - “Five and Dime’s” we called them, once a staple on every main street in every town in America. As Christmas approaches, I … [Read more...]

The Best Birdseed

December 17, 2015 by Jim Brewer

There are approximately 5 million of us who enjoy backyard bird watching to some degree and it’s hard to watch and observe without scattering a few seeds. As a mater of fact, according to the 2014 Wild Bird Feeding Industry research, 3 million Americans bought bird seed totaling $6.3 billion. Since money – and birdseed – doesn’t grow on trees, we birders need to get the most bang for our bucks. … [Read more...]

The Big Rockfish Are Here

December 10, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Dr. Ken Neill, IIII   Fish up to 65.4 pounds have been weighed in so far. There have been others pushing the 60-pound mark and many over 30 pounds are being caught. The large fish are primarily being caught by anglers fishing using live eels for bait. There has been good action on 20-something inch fish under working birds. These fish are being caught by casting, trolling, and … [Read more...]

Save Strokes: Get Fit

December 10, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Golf swings are like snowflakes – every one is different. One-size-fits-all hardly applies to golfers and their equipment. “You can’t play your best golf unless your clubs fit your personal swing and style,” states Kevin Gibson, Manager of the Charlottesville Golf Center on Berkmar Drive. “It is very important to have the right club to match your swing.” One of the best ways to reduce your … [Read more...]

The Beach on a Budget

December 10, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Lots of people didn’t take a vacation this year, for the obvious reason that business is off and money is tight within many family budgets. People are working longer hours these days just to stay even and are sometimes working two and three jobs. But with all the pressure and long hours, a little down time is needed more than ever.   I have found that it is possible to take a late fall … [Read more...]
