If you ever refer to refrigerator as an icebox – you are definitely a Boomer, or maybe even a pre-Boomer. Today, ice and refrigeration are part of our lives. It’s hard to imagine life without ice, but it wasn’t always that way. Until about 200 hundred years ago, ice was just something that happened in winter. In the 19th century, a few industrious sorts began shipping ice, harvested from … [Read more...]
Oil-less Turkey Fryers
How in Sam Hill do you fry a turkey – or anything for that matter – without oil? I was about to find out. For Christmas, my daughter Angelin and her husband, Brent, gave me a Big Easy Oil-less Turkey Fryer from Char-Broil. They knew how much I love to deep-fry a turkey, Cajun style, and that was my main present from my generous Greensboro family. The day after Christmas, we decided to check it … [Read more...]

A Nice Catch of ‘Togs
Andy Reams of Winchester had this report on a recent tautog venture on the Chesapeake Bay. My son Brad, his friend Matt and I caught 10 tautogs this past Saturday and Sunday over a man-made wreck near the CBBT. Three of these fish were just under the legal size of 17", thus we had to send them back to get bigger for next year. The largest two weighed just at 6 pounds each. When these fish … [Read more...]

My Golfing Wish List
Dear Santa, I know you don’t get a lot of rounds in at the North Pole, what with the toy making season and 4 feet or snow through most of the year, but I sure love to play the game down here and I have listed a few special golfing gifts I’m hoping to find under my tree this Christmas. First, a dozen balls. But I don’t want balls that go farther, spin better and have more control … [Read more...]
Born This Day
While Shepherds Watched, Part IV Amos was now alone, a sole shepherd guarding the sheep, as the others departed hastily towards Bethlehem in search of the newborn King. The Angels had come and gone, leaving the shepherds with amazement and joy. The Messiah, promised from the beginning of time, had been born that night in Bethlehem. But young Amos thought someone had to stay and … [Read more...]
Yo Mama’s Chicken
The more chicken you eat, the easier it ease to lose weight, so we eat a lot of chicken in our house. Trouble is, you soon run out of ways to prepare the tasty fowls, so I am always on the lookout for new and improved recipes. Not long ago, I was rummaging though the grocery aisles with the spices and flours and saw a breading called Mama’s Seasoned Coating Mix. I bought it not knowing exactly how … [Read more...]
The Humble Sparrow
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Matthew 10:29-31 The above is one of my favorite bible verses. The very poorest people of that day couldn’t afford sheep or goats for religious sacrifices, … [Read more...]
Tuna at the Canyon
Dr. Ken Neill, III A fairly epic December tuna bite has developed in the Norfolk Canyon area over the past week. Boats making it out are coming in with limits of yellowfin tuna and even some dolphin. Some bigeye tuna are also being caught. We don’t know how long this early Christmas present will last so you might want to get out there now if you can. Offshore bottom fishing … [Read more...]
