Tanyard Ready for Action

March 31, 2016 by Jim Brewer

Our foursome was trying to figure out which course to play in order to take advantage of a beautiful day this week and Tanyard Country Club in Louisa won out. It was a great choice. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen Tanyard in such good condition. Like most courses this time of year, the greens were being aerated, but they were in great shape grass-wise. The fairways were filling in nicely and the … [Read more...]

Beware of Gourmet Salted Peanuts

March 31, 2016 by Jim Brewer

Went through a little place called Waverly not long ago. The peanut capitol of the world, or so they claimed. I had been dunking some bloodworms in the lower Chesapeake for croakers. Decided to come back the scenic route up Route 460 instead of fighting the US Navy getting off work on I-64 at Hampton. I loaded up on the croakers, by the way. Had a cooler full. So it was back to Charlottesville … [Read more...]

Tilapia Cakes

March 31, 2016 by Jim Brewer

Farm raised Tilapia is fast becoming one of the most popular denizens in various seafood market counters in the United States. People enjoy the mild flavor of the fish and the fact that it is a sustainable resource, taking pressure off of many threatened, wild caught species. Tilapia is also relatively inexpensive. It was $4.99 a pound at Kroger’s last week, which drew my attention. This would … [Read more...]

Sweet Memories

March 31, 2016 by Jim Brewer

“Sweet, sweet, the memories you gave me.” Remember those lyrics from the Dean Martin hit, “Memories Are Made of This”? The line could also refer to Boomer candies, and boy did we ever have some sweet treats! Our passion for candy was so intense that dentists look back at the 1950’s and 60’s as “The Good Old Days.” It was during this period that Boomer kids ate candy like there would be no … [Read more...]

Spring Gobbler Forecast Promising

March 31, 2016 by Jim Brewer

A mild winter and a healthy flock of carry-over birds equals good prospects for the Spring Gobbler Season getting underway shortly. Virginia’s abundant population of wild turkeys entices many hunters to venture into the woods each spring when the sound of the male turkey, or gobbler, fills the air. This year the Spring Gobbler Season in Virginia runs from April 9 to May 14, 2016. The special … [Read more...]

Raising Chickens

March 31, 2016 by Jim Brewer

(Intro: More and more folks, even those in urban areas, are raising chickens. The difference between a fresh and a store bought egg is night and day. Plus, they’re fun to have around. Here are some notes from Sherman Shifflett, a regular CvilleBuzz contributor, about his experiences raising chickens.   By Sherman Shifflett   Except when I was in college and in the Army … [Read more...]

All Puffed Up

March 24, 2016 by Jim Brewer

Nags Head TW’s reports: On Wednesday, two inshore boats fished and caught puffers and shark. The water temp is 48 degrees. One offshore boat fished and returned early with a few yellowfin. Jennette’s Pier anglers caught skate and dogfish. The sound boaters caught and released stripers on Tuesday. That’s good news. In Albemarle Sound, the limit for stripers is 2 per person per day at 18” … [Read more...]
