Geese On The Way

January 7, 2016 by Jim Brewer

Here they come! We had just dropped one goose in a pond and Greg was in the boat making the retrieve when the honking of 125 birds got our attention. Greg hunkered down in the boat while I knelt by the cattails at the edge of the pond. The geese set their wings and we let ‘em have it. Two more geese were down, and then another flock approached. But Greg and I had enough geese to pick for … [Read more...]

A Boomer Remembers Duck Tails

January 7, 2016 by Jim Brewer

James Dean had captured the imagination and envy of most every young male in the mid-50s with his standout performance in Rebel Without a Cause. In the movie, also starring Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo, Dean had rolled into town, a new kid on the block and oozing coolness. He was, in fact, beyond cool. He was the epitome of everything a young teen male would like to be - confident, rebellious, … [Read more...]

Cooking Do’s and Don’ts

January 7, 2016 by Jim Brewer

Not everything I cook turns out as an award winning “Chopped Champion. In fact, I have experienced a number of disasters in and around the kitchen. It’s just that I don’t write about those very often. Today, however, is a confessional. This is a recipe for “How Not To” cook Blackened Quail. I had a few quail in the freezer from a prior hunt on a Virginia game preserve and I wanted to try a … [Read more...]

Oh Christmas Tree

January 7, 2016 by Jim Brewer

Christmas is over. It’s time to un-decorate the tree, drag it out to the curb and let the trash guys do their thing. But not so fast! A Christmas tree has many uses after the holiday season is over. For one, it makes ideal cover for small birds as they face the coming winter. On a few occasions, I have convinced my wife to let me drag the tree to my vegetable garden and remain there until the … [Read more...]

Deer Season Recap

January 7, 2016 by Jim Brewer

By Sherman T. Shifflett   Opening day of deer season in Virginia is always an exciting event for me. So is the final day of hunting season. I'm glad to see it come in and I'm glad to see it end. By all accounts, Fox Run Hunt Club had a successful season. About 25 club members harvested 52 deer. The tally was 56 last year and 66 the year before. We figured the count would be down … [Read more...]

Mahi-Mahi Time

December 31, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Virginia Saltwater Dr. Julie Ball reports   Offshore, weather permitting, the bite can be good with nice yellowfin tuna, bigeye tuna, and Mahi the primary catch. Swordfish are still a possibility at the Norfolk Canyon if boats can find a good weather window for overnight trips. Windy conditions are keeping boats at home for a few days, but once the weather clears, expect the … [Read more...]

Picking Up Worms

December 31, 2015 by Jim Brewer

I had a paper route when I was 12 years old and every morning I was out and about delivering the Beckley Post Herald to my 30 or so subscribers in Lewisburg, WV. Lewisburg is limestone country with rich soil, a soil that supports a large night crawler population. On warm, wet mornings, the night crawlers were all over the streets and I had to swerve my bike to keep from running over them. … [Read more...]

VSGA VIP Cards

December 31, 2015 by Jim Brewer

The best deal in golf is a VSGA VIP Card. For an upfront fee of just $65 (Supporter Level), a card holder can play over 200 courses in Virginia and West Virginia for basically the cost of a golf cart rental. Last year, I used my VIP Card at Meadowcreek and Lake Monticello on 4 occasions each. I used it at Tanyard three times, and also at Old Trail, Stony Creek, Greene Hills, Waynesboro Country … [Read more...]

Childress Paints & More

December 31, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Just as important as it is for folks to buy good paint, they should buy the right paint. There are lots of places in Charlottesville that sell paint. But only Childress Paints & More sells Pittsburg and Porter, the finest paints in the business. And no other paint dealer takes the time to work one-on-one with customers, as does Barry Childress, to make sure they get the right paint for the job … [Read more...]
