Tufted Titmouse

December 10, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Who would ever name a bird “titmouse?” The poor little tufted titmouse has nothing in common with a mouse, or the other part of its name. The regal little bird with the crest should have been named the silver prince or something equally as distinguished, But it’s name is the tufted titmouse and we always have them at our feeder. About 10 years ago, I was blessed to witness the fledging of a … [Read more...]

Blueberry Stuff

December 10, 2015 by Jim Brewer

My wife and a group of her early morning exercise friends meet periodically for breakfast. Sometimes they go to a local restaurant and sometimes they meet at someone’s home. A couple years back, they came over to our house and I volunteered to cook for them. One of the dishes I served was a blueberry cobbler, sort of. The girls called it “blueberry stuff”, but they loved it and ate every morsel. … [Read more...]

Boomers and Grandkids

December 10, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Becoming a Boomer is not all it’s made out to be, even though they say we control 80% of all the spendable income in the United States. If that’s the case, Boomer wives control 99% of the 80%. So male Boomers aren’t much better off than they were as teenagers, when a gallon of gas sold for a quarter and vanilla Cokes at the malt shop were a dime Also, with Boomer-hood, comes Arthur, whether you … [Read more...]

Tending Special Sheep

December 10, 2015 by Jim Brewer

(Part II in a IV-part series) Amos, his father Benjamin and his uncle Shimron had just finished driving their sheep to the outskirts of Bethlehem. Amos, a young man of 14, had placed his bedding at the entrance to the fold, keeping the sheep inside and guarding the flock from predators. These were not ordinary sheep. They were special. The flock included the lambs that would be used as a … [Read more...]

Trout Update

December 3, 2015 by Jim Brewer

By now, all of Virginia’s stockable lakes and streams have received at least one stocking of trout courtesy the Game Department. With hunting season in full swing, many sportsmen overlook this fishery or some may assume “It’s too cold.” But it’s not. Trout will feed in very cold water, down into the 30’s, but the bite is slower. It may be tough to draw a trout to the surface with a dry fly, but … [Read more...]

Big Flounder Time

December 3, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Virginia Peninsula Report Dr. Ken Neill, IIII   Wrecks in the Triangle Reef area are holding good numbers of flounder. Sea bass and bluefish are being caught off of the ocean wrecks with the deep-water wrecks holding the largest sea bass. There are still some triggerfish available. Big bluefin tuna are being caught out of Morehead City. There should be some bluefin off of our … [Read more...]

Cuisinart 155 Food Slicer

December 3, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Over the Thanksgiving holiday we had a few friends drop by to meet and greet my kids and grandkids. I suppose we had 30 guests for a dinner party. Along with a big bowl of jumbo shrimp and the usual spread of veggies, cheese and fruits, we served an eye of round roast. Eye of round is one of the tastiest cuts of beef, and it’s also one of the most reasonably priced. But it can be tough and … [Read more...]

The Golden Age of Radio

December 3, 2015 by Jim Brewer

We all listen to the radio. Spending many hours in our cars going to and from work or shopping, the radio is our constant companion. We check it for news, talk shows, sports updates, weather reports and the music genre of choice. But Boomers look back fondly to Golden Age of Radio, when a radio was truly the center of our lives. We recall our younger days, waking to radio programs and music. … [Read more...]

Jay Walking

December 3, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Some of the most entertaining birds in our back yard are the blue jays. Jays often get bad press because they will bust up nests of other birds. They are very opportunistic and will kill baby birds and eat other bird eggs if given the chance. But they are one of the smartest birds on the planet and I enjoy sharing my back yard with a small, resident flock. Recently, I was in the backyard … [Read more...]

Deer Nuggets

December 3, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Deer season is fully underway and hunters are reporting better results than last year, though the jury is still out on the final harvest numbers. Venison, of course, is especially healthy meat, leaner by far than commercial beef. It is delicious when cooked properly, but not so much when overcooked or under seasoned. Sherman T. Shiffllett, a CvilleBuzz contributor, offers this recipe as a … [Read more...]
