My Personal Caddy

October 22, 2015 by Jim Brewer

They say it’s bad if you have more than 100 thoughts going through your mind while you’re making a golf swing, so I try to think about only 20 or 30 things – which is why I’ll record lots of 6s and 7s on my score card instead of 4s and 5s. I’ve only had a caddy two or three times in my golfing career, but if I had good sense, I’d serve as my own caddy with these few, simple … [Read more...]

Sausage & Grits Casserole

October 22, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Twice a year, four of my buddies and I head for Cliff View Inn in Alleghany county where we fish, play golf, tell old war stories, harass each other unmercifully and have a great time. Probably too good of a time. For this biannual gathering, I serve as the cook – every meal. The prime reason for this personal sacrifice is that if I didn’t do it, and didn’t buy the groceries, we’d likely eat … [Read more...]

Fall on the Outer Banks

October 13, 2015 by Jim Brewer

It’s a great time to be on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, especially if you’re in a fishing boat. The Oregon Inlet Fishing Center says that it’s great fall fishing right now. Norma notes that the fish are cooperating after the storm. OFFSHORE: Anglers, including those from a make-up charter group, brought in good numbers of mahi mahi, near limits of yellow-fin tuna, and good numbers of … [Read more...]

Pendants For Fun

October 13, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Whether your space allows for a single pendant as a solo style statement or a grouping for a sizable impact, pendants are a great go-to for decorative task lighting.  Keep in mind that when placed in an area where people tend to gather, such as a kitchen island, that pendants should be installed high enough that people can see one another, but not so high that they are blinded by the glare of the … [Read more...]

Golf Tales

October 13, 2015 by Jim Brewer

A gushy reporter told Phil Mickelson, "You are spectacular, your name is synonymous with the game of golf. You really know your way around the course. What's your secret?" Mickelson replied, "The holes are numbered."   A husband and wife are on the 9th green when suddenly she collapses with a heart attack!

"Help me dear," she groans to her husband.

The husband calls 911 on his … [Read more...]

Harmon’s Cottages

October 13, 2015 by Jim Brewer

In the bible, God once told Moses to take off his sandals because the place on which the Great Lawmaker was standing was holy ground. There is a spot in West Virginia’s Grant County that I feel that way about. It’s holy ground, indeed, where God did some of his very best work. In fact, I think maybe He was showing off a little. This is spectacular country. The South Branch of the North Fork of … [Read more...]

Jiminy Crickets

October 13, 2015 by Jim Brewer

As I mowed the grass last week, I noticed tons of crickets scampering to get out of the way. “Run away! Run away!” I imagined them yelling to one another, Several times, I stopped the mower so the little insects could leap to cover. In the house, if I see a cricket, I catch it and release it outside. It’s bad luck to kill a cricket, you know. I’ve always had a fondness in my heart for these … [Read more...]

Trees and Kids

October 13, 2015 by Jim Brewer

My favorite poem of all time is “Trees” by Joyce Kilmer. Mrs. Williams had us memorize it in 4th grade and I can still recite most of it even today. But at the time, I remember thinking that when God made trees, he was really thinking about kids. When I was a boy, one of my favorite pastimes was climbing trees and using my imagination. Billy Richmond and I climbed a huge oak tree in the woods … [Read more...]

Striper Cakes

October 13, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Several years ago, my brothers and I had some luck with stripers at Oregon Inlet. We caught enough to fill the refrigerator at our beach cottage. We dined in style that evening with broiled stripers in a lemon dill sauce. The next night was crab night. We picked up a bushel of beautiful “jimmie” crabs, already steamed. But we had a problem. At the time, my brother Charlie was not eating meat – … [Read more...]
