Potato Casserole for Company

September 10, 2015 by Jim Brewer

We had a family reunion last summer that drew around 30 uncles, cousins, nieces, brothers, sisters and grand kids. For one of the evening meals, we had barbeque catered through a local pit master. The other meal, the brothers and sisters chipped in with homemade dishes and my sister in law, Marsha Boggess (also the hostess for the gathering) prepared two huge platters of a potato casserole. I … [Read more...]

Lake Norman and Trump National

September 10, 2015 by Jim Brewer

I had the opportunity to take a road trip over Labor Day to Lake Norman, just north of Charlotte, NC. The reservoir happens to be the largest man-made body of fresh water in the Tarheel state. Along its 520 miles of shoreline are many magnificent homes and one spectacular golf course – The Trump National Golf Club of Charlotte. I would be playing golf there for two days with my brothers, Charlie, … [Read more...]

Rio Hill Wine & Gourmet

September 10, 2015 by Jim Brewer

I had enjoyed a particular bottle of wine and couldn’t find it in the wine department at a nearby grocery store. I stopped by Rio Hill Wine and asked my friend Doug Hotz if he knew about it. “I’ll check and see if I can get it," he said. Three days later, Doug had tracked down a distributor and said he could get a bottle or even a case in three days. That’s the kind of service customers at Rio … [Read more...]

Hairy the Spider

September 10, 2015 by Jim Brewer

I noticed him a couple weeks ago when I was bringing my morning paper in the house. He (maybe she) had spun a web extending from the eave over our small deck down to a gatepost below. Inside the web there appeared to be what was the remains of a moth. Yet, in two hours the web and its contents were completely gone. Vamoose! It turns out that Hairy, our resident spider, is a Spotted Orbweaver, … [Read more...]

Saltwater Fishing Is “Spotty”

September 3, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Dr. Ken Neill III says while it may not be like the glory years, now is a great time to catch a mess of nice spot in the bay and tidal rivers. Dr. Julie Ball also notes that spot are gaining more attention, with good hauls of decent fish coming from local inlets, Willoughby Bay and the lower Bay rivers. Croakers, Julie says, are also providing action inside Rudee Inlet. The best bait for spot … [Read more...]

Smallmouth On The Fly

September 3, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Doing battle with a smallmouth bass on a fly rod is one of the most exciting events in the outdoor world. And it’s not easy. First you have to lure the bass into striking, and then you have to have almost perfect timing to set the hook and drive the barb home. Throughout the battle you must keep constant pressure as the fish leaps 4, 5 or 6 times. To land even a 14-inch smallmouth on a fly rod is … [Read more...]

Sunday Nights With Ed Sullivan

September 3, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Boomers recall Sunday as a special night. It was both the culmination of a week gone by and the head start for a new one. It was also a special family time. After supper, Boomers gathered around the television set. Sunday night meant one thing and one thing only. The Ed Sullivan Show. To miss the Ed Sullivan Show was like missing a meal. Families in the Boomer years simply had to watch Ed … [Read more...]

Nancy Bs House of Lights

September 3, 2015 by Jim Brewer

It's official. The signs are up, the business cards and stationary have been printed, the authorities have been notified and have approved the change. No longer Builders Lighting, it's now Nancy Bs House of Lights. It has not been an easy process, but one that Nancy Brewer (Nancy B) thought would be worthwhile. That's because - even though she is firmly established with the area's top builders … [Read more...]

A Road Trip to Deerfield

September 3, 2015 by Jim Brewer

“We’ve got to stop at Deerfield and get a hot dog,” I informed my hunting partners, Guy Cohen and Courtney Craft. Somewhat puzzled at the urgency of my request, they agreed and we soon pulled into the Deerfield Country Store on Rt. 629 in west Augusta County on our way to Hunter’s Paradise for a chukar hunt. There were two reasons I wanted to stop at the Deerfield Store two years ago. First, … [Read more...]

Getting Ready to Hit Your Shot

September 3, 2015 by Jim Brewer

By Daryl Daughtrey, PGA Professional   An old golf guru once told me that when your shots start going everywhere, other than where you want them to go, head to the practice tee and start subtracting. Subtract everything you have read about the golf swing, what you’ve been told or learned about the golf swing. What this guru meant was that a golfer must get back to the basics. As … [Read more...]
