Home Lighting Do’s and Don’ts

September 28, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Please consider these useful DO’s and Don’ts when it is time to buy and install your home lighting fixtures! First off, DO have fun with the process and never get rushed.  Lighting is the jewelry of your home. I know, I know, it can be overwhelming when your electrician or contractor tells you they are ready to install lighting right away and asks you to get your fixtures. We have customers who … [Read more...]

The Galley Restaurant: Deltaville’s Finest

September 28, 2023 by Jim Brewer

The Galley Restaurant has been around for quite a while. I ate there with my old friend Bill Trevillian about 30 years ago. Since then, it has changed hands several times and even closed down for a while. But it’s back up and running and is – in my opinion – Deltaville’s premiere restaurant. We have eaten there each time we visit Deltaville or Gloucester and have never been disappointed. It’s a … [Read more...]

The Gloucester Wine Festival

September 28, 2023 by Jim Brewer

There are “Festivals” for everything – Oysters, Crabs, Blueberries, Garlic, Apples. You name it and it has a “Festival”. There is one Festival, however, worth remembering, and that’s the Wine Festival in Gloucester. This one is special. We were on a mini vacation at Gloucester last weekend, and someone mentioned the Wine Festival in town. The event was scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, but it … [Read more...]

The Best Time to Fish

September 28, 2023 by Jim Brewer

I have always heard that the best time to fish saltwater was the day before or the day after a hurricane. Last week, I had the opportunity to check out that theory, and it was right on. After we had booked our VRBO cottage on Ferry Creek near the Piankatank River, we found out that Hurricane Ophelia would be passing through during our stay. Since we would not be taking a direct hit, we decided to … [Read more...]

Pass the Popcorn, Please!

September 20, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Popcorn popping was a regular treat for Boomer kids. With a new Zenith TV console in the living room, a typical weekday night featured watching westerns and popping corn, with a pitcher of Kool Aid as a chaser. The earliest popper I remember was just a pot with a lid. Mom would get the oil hot, add a half cup of corn and we hoped for the best – that most of the kernels popped and nothing … [Read more...]

Homemade Reese’s Bars

September 20, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Homemade Reese’s Bars - It's a fun treat to make, especially for kids, but hey, everybody loves Reese’s Cups. Put out a big bowl of assorted candy and no matter the age, Reese’s Cups go first. Chocolate and peanut butter is a winning combination. Last week as a change of pace, I decided to make a batch of Homemade Reese’s Cup Bars instead of my usual Chocolate Chip Cookies. It’s easy … [Read more...]

My Catbird is Hanging in There

September 20, 2023 by Jim Brewer

In the past, my catbirds always fly away in early September, as soon as the chicks are up and at ’em. And they did again this year, except for one. A lone, single catbird has decided to stay. I expect he or she is a young bird, likely hatched in the thicket behind our house. There were two catbird families that used our yard and feeders. Nancy saw him a week or so ago and told me. Can’t be, … [Read more...]

The corn maze is open again. Liberty Mills Farm has set aside 34 acres for a cornfield maze, one of the largest of its kind. The Maze is open for exploration on Saturdays from 10 to 6 and Sunday from 10 to 5. There are four separate trails ranging from “Anyone can do this” to “Where the hell are we?” You can purchase your tickets ahead of time on-line or at the Farm at Somerset.
