My Brewer family hails from Clemmons, NC, just outside of Winston Salem. This is Moravian Country, home to the best cookies on the planet.
The Moravians are from the historical region of Moravia in the Czech Republic, who then fled the counter revolution in 1722. In 1753, many found their way to North Carolina and made their homes in the Piedmont Region. Of German descent, the Moravians can some-kind-of cook and bake. Two of their famous desserts included Moravian Sugar Cake and Moravian Ginger Cookies. My family has been baking the ginger cookies, which we called Molasses Cookies, for over 100 years. I even baked some myself a few years back, and this is truly a labor of love. It’s a two-day project and the cookies are rolled so thinly that it takes literally dozens of batches in the oven to complete. But they are melt-in-your-mouth delicious.
A week or so ago, I was in the cookie section at Food Lion, looking for something sweet, but not loaded with calories. I happened to see some Triple Ginger Cookies from Dewey’s Bakery, which is a 100-year-old bakery located in Winston Salem. I bought a box and they are delicious. Loaded with ginger and extra thin, 4 cookies have only 60 calories. That means I can have a little something sweet but not embarrass myself on the bathroom scales the next morning.
