The Texas Roadhouse is just around the corner from our house. It’s easy to get to, there are almost always a couple seats open at the bar (where we like to eat), the prices are fair, and the food is really good. Naturally, it’s one of our top choices for dining out. Last week, I arrived home after a couple days on the road and we decided to hit “The Loud Place” for dinner. Nancy calls it the … [Read more...]
For Trout, Try Live Shrimp
Trout are mostly in the shallower areas of the tributaries, where there’s grass flats. They love live shrimp, so if you can get some, use them as bait. Bluefish and Spanish Mackerel are biting across the lower Bay, and you can catch them pretty easily. Red Drum are leaving the Bay and heading to the ocean, so to catch them while you can. The CBBT is a hot spot for tright now. Sandbridge is the … [Read more...]
In Freshwater, It’s That Time
As the evening temps dip into the 50’s, as the water cools, and as the days grow shorter, the fish figure it’s that time. Time to feed and fatten up for the coming winter. At Lake Orange, for example, water temperatures have dropped to the low 70s. Bass and crappie are heading to the bank. The next few weeks will bring bass and crappie on to shallow brush, feeding on baitfish. A variety of soft … [Read more...]
Return to the Greenbrier
We were three high school buddies from Lewisburg. Dave, Harold, and I had played ball together, we had gone to school together, and as boys, we had spent hours and hours fishing on the Greenbrier River. Through the years, Dave and I have stayed in touch, but I lost track of Harold about 60 years ago. He contacted me through CvilleBuzz and we have been great pen pals for the last 7 or 8 … [Read more...]
Three Guys, Two Bedrooms
The cottage on the Greenbrier was magnificent and we spent much of our time on the spacious porch overlooking the river. It was a perfect place for our rendezvous except for one problem - there were three of us and only two bedrooms. I was not concerned - at first. There was a spacious couch in the living room, and I take some of my best naps on couches. So, I brought sheets, a blanket and a … [Read more...]

Alexandra Lombard, wildlife health coordinator for the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR), provided an update. “Right now, we have CWD in nine counties in Northern Virginia and in four counties in Southwest Virginia,” she said. “The disease is … [Read more...]
A Volunteer Something
One perk of being a backyard gardener is that you never know what might pop up. Volunteer plants, for example. One year, I had a strange plant sprout and could not for the life of me figure out what it was. We let it grow to maturity, and finally pulled it up. It was a peanut vine compliments of my resident squirrels This summer, I have another unknown addition to my garden. I thought … [Read more...]
My Resident Mockingbird
There have always been mockingbirds in our neighborhood. In past years, they have staked out vantage points in my neighbor’s yard. Occasionally, they would come to my yard to drink from the birdbath, but mostly they were my neighbor’s mockingbirds. But not this year. For the first time, a dominant mockingbird has claimed my back yard as his turf and woe be to the other mockingbirds who … [Read more...]

Southern Baked Chicken
I’m always on the lookout for different ways to cook chicken. Like it or not, chicken is better for you that steak or lasagna or pizza or any number of other yummy dishes. The trick is it to have chicken taste (almost) as good as the yummy things. I saw a recipe for Southern Baked Chicken and the “southern” part got my attention. With the exception of chitlin’s, most anything … [Read more...]
