Recipes don’t have to be fancy or exotic to be good. Most comfort foods, in fact, are simple recipes, and it’s hard to beat comfort food, like old-fashioned corn pudding. This is a dish enjoyed by everyone and it tastes almost like a dessert. Corn pudding is easy to make and sure to please. I don’t know why we don’t have and enjoy this dish more often. Here’s how I make mine. First, I … [Read more...]
Great Balls of Milkweed!
We had a most interesting plant in our yard this year. Nancy planted it in early summer and it survived the heat and prospered. We noticed as the tiny white blooms grew that ants flocked to the sweet smelling flowers, then bees, then hummingbirds. The plant is called – and I am not making this up – Hairy Balls. Hairy Balls (gomphocarpus physocarpus) is a milkweed plant, and as most know, … [Read more...]
Think Pink
By Nancy Brewer October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Being committed to raising awareness for breast cancer research is one of our goals at Nancy B’s House of Lights. We support research efforts and this month - having a little fun along the way - we joined the challenge for this important cause with Hinkley Lighting, wearing as much pink as possible. Join us in this worthy cause. Think … [Read more...]
Trying To Forget Leisure Suits
Boomers look back fondly on many events and milestones throughout their lives: The days of hot cars, great music, graduations, weddings, birth announcements and lives full of excitement and memories. But like the 18 ½ minute gap in the presidential tapes of Richard Nixon, there was one segment from Boomer history that should be erased – the era of Leisure Suits. How did we let that happen? … [Read more...]
Red Hot Fishing Continues
It seems to be non-stop – fishing at Nags Head and on the Outer Banks. But now, not only are puppy drum and speckled trout blasting baits, the stripers are getting in on the act as well. Capt., Reese Stecher of Beach Bum Fishing says that on Monday, his party caught a 10-fish striper limit with beautiful fish up to 25-inches. They continue to hammer the specks and pups as well. The piers were … [Read more...]
South River News
Tommy Lawhorne at South River Fly Shop in Waynesboro says that no stocking has taken place yet in the South River Fly Fishing Only Area in Lyndhurst, but some really nice fish are being caught. Trico's are falling on most days in late mornings along with some small caddis flies and the occasional Blue Wing Olive. Water levels are low, but Monday’s rain helped a great deal with more to come this … [Read more...]
Fall Golf: Old Trail
In our current series on fall golf in Central Virginia, this week’s destination is Old Trail, at the very foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Crozet. Old Trail has had some ups and downs in the 15 or so years it has been around. When it first opened, it was awfully difficult. The course designer wanted almost a links course, with lots of high grass and grown up areas. Problem was, with all … [Read more...]
KS Hair Salon
The outside sign at Albemarle Square said, “Barber”, that’s it. I was intrigued, but never stopped by. But one day I was in a hurry and didn’t have time to make an appointment with the girl who had been styling my hair, so I gave the shop a try. All the barbers were Chinese and I wondered if I would get one of those “Moe” haircuts. I figured it would eventually grow out, so I took a chair. It … [Read more...]
On the Road to Sunset Beach
Cowboys used to ride off into the sunset. I don’t know where they were heading, west I suppose. That’s where the sun sets on most afternoons. I know of a place where the sunset is to the east. East, as on the Eastern Shore. It’s Sunset Beach Inn near Cape Charles on the Virginia’s Pristine Eastern Shore. It has become a favored mini-vacation destination for Nancy and me. If we’ve got a couple, … [Read more...]
Kielbasa Sliders
Sliders are all the rage these days at restaurants and catered events. Basically, sliders are mini-burgers. They’re smaller and you have to eat more to fill up, but they make good “finger food” at parties and get-togethers. The smaller, slider buns are readily available at all grocery stores. But sliders don’t have to be burgers. I had a salmon slider recently that was excellent and … [Read more...]
