He has been with us since we moved into our house in August 1973. He was most important tree in our yard, our main maple, guarding our home from a brutal afternoon sun for over four decades. But now he’s gone. Our faithful silver maple tree is now firewood. He was dying, almost completely dead, and an eyesore, and we had to chop him down. The builder of our home in Woodbrook, Claude Cotton, … [Read more...]
Egglettes? They Work
I like an occasional hard-boiled egg in a tossed salad and I dearly love deviled eggs. What I do not love is trying to get a hard-boiled egg out of the shell in something resembling one piece. Not long ago I had hard-boiled a dozen eggs and set about the task of shell removal. One of the eggs – a unique talking egg – said there was no way in hell he was coming out without a … [Read more...]

Specks In the Creeks: Drum in the Surf
Speckled trout action is picking up inside Lynnhaven Inlet, Rudee Inlet and in the Eastern Shore creeks. Anglers are catching a lot of undersize fish, but there are keepers mixed in. Leadheads with a twister tail, or Gulps are the most popular baits, but topwaters seem to be catching the larger fish. Puppy drum, some in the 20 to 28 inch class, are in the same areas as the specks. … [Read more...]
Fly Fishing Passage Creek
By Harry Murray Passage Creek flows through the history-rich Fort Valley just east of Edinburg, Virginia. George Washington surveyed this area when he was young and there are well-documented stories that he considered using this well protected area for his army. Stonewall Jackson’s “foot cavalry” used the valley frequently which would be expected since many of his men were from the … [Read more...]
Boomers Loved Sears
Sears going bankrupt? It can’t be! Sears was America’s store. It’s where Boomers bought everything from sleeping bags to stereos to back-to-school clothes for their kids. And lives there a Boomer who can’t remember that special day when the Sears catalogue arrived in the mail? In the mail. Imagine that. That big, fat catalogue had hunting clothes and frying pans. It had ladies underwear … [Read more...]
The 3-6-9 Approach to Golf
The last time I played a round with my brother, Charlie, we discussed Par 5 holes and my difficulty with them. Since they are long to begin with, I feel like I have to swing extra hard, which is a guaranteed formula of failure for duffers like me. But Charlie said he had read someplace that a teaching pro advised his high handicap students to play a 3-6-9 combination. Use a 3-wood off the tee, hit … [Read more...]
Tomahawk Farm
One of the top fee fishing establishments in Virginia is Tomahawk Farm on the Jackson River near Warm Springs. My pals, Dave Gladwell, John Savides and Glenn Busch have been fishing that stretch for the past several years when we stay a few days at Cliff View Inn. My fly fishing days are largely in the rear view window since the golf bug bit me, but my buds love this stream. This is beautiful … [Read more...]
A Texas Roadhouse Review
Nancy and I were in the mood for steaks. Both of us had been traveling and preferred not to cook. We didn’t want anything fancy, just a nice slab of beef. We decided on the Texas Roadhouse, on Route 29 in Charlottesville, not far from our house. Nancy had eaten there once before. She said it was noisy, but the food was okay. I don’t mind noisy if the food is good, and I was curious, so we gave … [Read more...]
Orange Butterflies
I’m not sure we had any Monarch butterflies this summer, though we have planted milkweed and have a towering butterfly bush. We have enjoyed seeing other butterflies, however, including lots of orange ones in recent weeks. I believe most of the orange butterflies visiting our yard are Viceroy butterflies. They are almost identical to Monarchs with similar orange-brown wings. A black line across … [Read more...]
