My wife, Nancy, found herself out and about at lunchtime last week with nothing to eat. She rode past Arby’s and thought, “Why not?” That night she said she had a really good lunch at Arby’s and couldn’t remember the last time we ate there. I couldn’t either and I don’t know why. For fast food and quick, easy meals, we often go to a deli, a pizza place or the old faithful MacDonald’s. That … [Read more...]
Model Airplanes
I was 5 when my family moved from Pittsburg to Beckley, West Virginia. My dad was an FBI agent and had been transferred. I immediately made friends with a 6 year-old boy across the street – Billy Richmond. Billy and I had countless imaginary games of Army, Navy and Air Force. A hill on a vacant lot became a German fortified position we had to capture; an old log behind Billy’s house was … [Read more...]
Vegetarian Chili
When I cook chili, it’s a weight gain waiting to happen. Chili wouldn’t be so fattening if you could stick to one small bowl and no crackers, but who can do that? If the chili is good, you have to have at least one second helping and the more crackers, the better. In fact, a nice grilled cheese sandwich makes a terrific side to chili. Ergo, weight gain. I have never been a huge fan … [Read more...]
Raymond Hunt Plumbing Repair
It is truly satisfying to call on a home service company you’ve never used before with good results. So often, it’s, “I’ll never use them again.” This week, however, I had a really good experience. When we came back from a trip to North Carolina, we found water on the floor at the base of our toilet. Several years back, we had to have the commode lifted and set back in place with … [Read more...]
One Flew Over the Chicken Coop
It is 190 miles from Charlottesville to Greensboro via Rt. 29. I know the stretch well, as my daughter Angelin and her family live in North Carolina and there are grandchildren there that require regular visits. There is also one place to eat along the way that has the best fried chicken you have ever put in your mouth. And that is the Chicken Coop at the Nelson Food Market. The … [Read more...]
Goodbye Old Friend
He has been with us since we moved into our house in August 1973. He was most important tree in our yard, our main maple, guarding our home from a brutal afternoon sun for over four decades. But now he’s gone. Our faithful silver maple tree is now firewood. He was dying, almost completely dead, and an eyesore, and we had to chop him down. The builder of our home in Woodbrook, Claude Cotton, … [Read more...]
Egglettes? They Work
I like an occasional hard-boiled egg in a tossed salad and I dearly love deviled eggs. What I do not love is trying to get a hard-boiled egg out of the shell in something resembling one piece. Not long ago I had hard-boiled a dozen eggs and set about the task of shell removal. One of the eggs – a unique talking egg – said there was no way in hell he was coming out without a … [Read more...]

Specks In the Creeks: Drum in the Surf
Speckled trout action is picking up inside Lynnhaven Inlet, Rudee Inlet and in the Eastern Shore creeks. Anglers are catching a lot of undersize fish, but there are keepers mixed in. Leadheads with a twister tail, or Gulps are the most popular baits, but topwaters seem to be catching the larger fish. Puppy drum, some in the 20 to 28 inch class, are in the same areas as the specks. … [Read more...]
Fly Fishing Passage Creek
By Harry Murray Passage Creek flows through the history-rich Fort Valley just east of Edinburg, Virginia. George Washington surveyed this area when he was young and there are well-documented stories that he considered using this well protected area for his army. Stonewall Jackson’s “foot cavalry” used the valley frequently which would be expected since many of his men were from the … [Read more...]
