Lemon Roasted Chicken

October 1, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Some of the best recipes are simple, not only simple to prepare but simple in ingredients. Lemon Roasted Chicken is such a dish. The prep time is about five minutes and the cooking time is less than an hour, so how simple can it be? And it’s delicious. There are a number of variations to this recipe but the best results come when the bird is cooked quickly in a relatively hot oven. Keep the … [Read more...]

Busted!

October 1, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Boomers look back on many great memories from our youth as well as some that were not so great. One of those memories we’d all like to forget is our first foray into a life of crime and getting caught. I’m talking about “sticky little fingers” and most kids have them. They see something they want and take it. I was a relatively innocent six-year old until I was led down the primrose path by … [Read more...]

Get Lost! At Liberty Farm

October 1, 2015 by Jim Brewer

A pretty weekend day in October? What to do and where to go? How about getting lost – lost as in a corn maze and Liberty Mills Farm in Somerset has a good one. Last year, we took our two Atlanta grandkids to Liberty Farm and bought tickets to a difficult maze. If I had not dropped shiny white pebbles behind me (a la Hansel and Gretel) we’d still be out there. This year, they say, it’s an even … [Read more...]

A Matter of Timing

October 1, 2015 by Jim Brewer

When it comes to backyard gardens, timing isn’t the only thing – it’s everything. Looking back, my timing was way off for my 2015 garden. I always try to get both an early crop and a later crop since my garden is relatively small – about 14 by 50 feet. Still, if the weather cooperates and I can plant when I need to, I can get very nice production from my small plot. In 2014, I planted my … [Read more...]

Blue Ridge Trailers

October 1, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Warranties are nice, but the last thing you want in life is to have to redeem a warranty when you are pulling a trailer. That means your axle broke, the brakes locked, the tires failed or any number of other serious issues. If you were pulling a couple thousand pounds of equipment or livestock down the highway at 60 miles per hour when the problem occurred, the results could be catastrophic, if … [Read more...]

Zoysia Fairways

October 1, 2015 by Jim Brewer

I read someplace that if you hit a golf ball in the fairway – that lovely stretch of grass directly in front of the tee box – you’ll likely get a lower score than if you consistently hit it into lakes, shrubbery, creeks, blackberry thickets or waist high grass. So, the fairway is a nice place to be. It’s even nicer if it’s a fairway sewn in zoysia grass. That’s almost better than teeing it up … [Read more...]

Blown Away!

September 24, 2015 by Jim Brewer

For most boats, it was a week to stay in port and work on the decks and motors at Oregon Inlet. A few boats ventured out on Monday and caught mahi-mahi and had good results with billfish. There were 9 white marlins, 2 sailfish, and 1 blue marlin released Monday. Since then, most boats stayed inshore. A few went just offshore and caught kings, blues and Spanish. Monday, most boats have remained … [Read more...]

Big Browns on the South

September 24, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Big Browns on the South   Tommy Lawhorne of South River Fly Shop in Waynesboro went on an electro-shocking expedition with the Game Department biologists and said they shocked up a 25-inch brown trout. Tommy said the fish was as fat as a non-Tom Brady football and in perfect condition. Tommy estimated the fish at 7 to 9 years of age, indicating good survival conditions throughout the … [Read more...]

The Schilling Show

September 24, 2015 by Jim Brewer

One voice in Charlottesville rises like a lighthouse beacon in the fog in protest of intrusive and wasteful government. One voice makes sense among all the progressive babbling. One voice stands strongly for the interests of local businesses and their employees. That one voice is Rob Schilling of WINA’s The Schilling Show. As a rule, the various media are more than glad to accept hard earned … [Read more...]

A Fun Round At Tanyard

September 24, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Greg Leffler, my regular golfing buddy, and I figured we could sneak out for a few hours and get in a round of golf last Sunday afternoon. We wanted a fun course and one that would be uncrowded, so we could get in 18 holes and get back home in time to keep the wives happy. One course quickly came to mind – The Greens at Tanyard Golf Club. Tanyard is one of my favorite places to play. It’s not a … [Read more...]
