Brave Sir Robin

October 29, 2015 by Jim Brewer

I love the Monty Python crew and shenanigans. I especially enjoyed their classic movie, Monty Python and the Holy Grail. In the movie, one of the nights is dubbed Brave Sir Robin, even though he was a coward. The hilarious scene went something like this. Minstrel: [singing] Brave Sir Robin ran away... Sir Robin: No! Minstrel: [singing] bravely ran away away... Sir Robin: I … [Read more...]

Hurry To Nags Head

October 29, 2015 by Jim Brewer

If you have been waiting to make a road trip to Nags Head, now is the time. The stripers in the sound behind Nags Head are plentiful and they’re biting. Says Capt. Reese Stecher, a Nags Head Fishing Guide, “It’s not quite like the old days, but almost as good. The fish are all over the sound.” Reese said he and a client recently caught a limit of keepers in about 15 minutes. It was almost … [Read more...]

Squirrels Under Pressure

October 29, 2015 by Jim Brewer

There once was a pot called a pressure cooker which had a propensity of putting more food on the ceiling than on the plates. In our family, when Mom got out her infamous pressure cooker, all the kids headed for their bedrooms. Better to study American History than to pick shrapnel and lima bean bullets from various parts of your body - in case “she blew.” But pressure cookers are no longer the … [Read more...]

Woodstone Meadows

October 29, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Visiting new courses for golfers is always fun. It’s a chance to play a course you’ve never played before, and maybe this time you’ll play from the fairways instead of from “you know where.” After all, the new course doesn’t know that you are a lousy golfer. It’s just happy to have your greens fee. My former neighbor, Ed Dent, invited me over to play his home course in McGaheysville – the … [Read more...]

The Chick Turns On

October 22, 2015 by Jim Brewer

It took a little cold snap and receding water levels - then the Chickahominy River caught fire. Mike Johncox at Riverside Camp in Lanexa says the crappie and the stripers are hungry and are finding their way into fish coolers. “We broke the ice with both crappie and striped action this past week,” Mike said. “Gary and Shirley Belk caught 50 crappie on Friday and 21 more on Saturday. They also … [Read more...]

Carolina Redfish

October 22, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Capt. Alan Cain   Fishing here along the NC coast has been good up until this last week’s bad weather, but with a few more days of tide flow the water should clear up quickly. We have been having some very good days targeting schools of redfish on the low tides and tailing redfish on the flood tides. Flounder fishing has also been very good with lots of quality 3-5lb. flounder being … [Read more...]

Goodbye Little Hummers

October 22, 2015 by Jim Brewer

They finally left this past week: Our resident hummingbirds, which have graced our sugar-water feeders for the past several months. We worried that they may have stayed too long in Virginia and perhaps our feeders were tempting the tiny creatures to overstay their visit. Not to worry. Just before the first frost, our hummers headed south. I wish them Godspeed. Here are some hummingbird … [Read more...]

Obey the Pack Laws

October 22, 2015 by Jim Brewer

What Boomer can ever forget that first uniform of his or her youth, likely from being a member of Cub Scouts or Brownies. I clearly recall that royal blue shirt with the bright yellow kerchief - my Cub Scout uniform in 4th grade. As a new scout recruit, I was fascinated by the badges and emblems, and I wanted as many as I could pin or sew on my uniform. They didn’t cost that much and I figured … [Read more...]

Personal Spas & Swim Spas Perfected

October 22, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Fall is here. What could be better than slipping into a toasty warm hot tub and enjoying a relaxing soak in a Bullfrog Spa? But there are other options as well. How about a little exercise or physical fitness regime in a swim spa? A swim spa is a perfect way to improve your swim stroke, stay in shape or convalesce, even when the pool is closed. Whatever your needs, Richard Pleasant, the owner of … [Read more...]

Road Trip to CrossKeys

October 22, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Boy, this would be a good weekend to get out, take a little road trip and see the beautiful colors of the changing autumn leaves. It would also be a good time to visit a Virginia vineyard and maybe hear some great music while savoring a bottle of crisp, white wine. What if you could do all this and enjoy some delicious food in a beautiful Shenandoah Valley setting? You can, at CrossKeys Vineyards … [Read more...]
