Tomatoes! Finally!

October 13, 2022 by Jim Brewer

I grew vines in my garden this summer. Not tomatoes, just vines. They bloomed on time, then nothing. Finally, a few baby tomatoes popped up but then went away. In early September, honest-to-God tomatoes finally begin to form on my four vines, but they mostly stayed green. The handful of tomatoes that did turn red were pecked by some critter, likely a chipmunk. Last week when we had a frost … [Read more...]

Green Frogs

October 13, 2022 by Jim Brewer

All frogs are green, aren’t they? No, some are brown, some are tan, and some are gray. But some frogs are really called “Green Frogs” and that’s what I have in my pond. For the past few years, each spring we have noticed hundreds of tiny tadpoles in Nancy’s lily pond - basically a 35-gallon tub where she grows water lilies. They would dart here and there for a few weeks, then … [Read more...]

Speckled Trout Are Everywhere

October 13, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Speckled trout are beginning to pop up everywhere in Virginia waters – from the bay inlets to the oceanfront. The piers around Hampton and Virginia Beach are also reporting nice catches. Puppy drum, too. The specks are going for live bait, like shrimp and spot as well as Mir-o-lures, jigs and topwater baits. Spot are abundant now, moving into inlets and cruising the river bottoms. … [Read more...]

Destination Deltaville

October 6, 2022 by Jim Brewer

When you own and run a small business (Nancy B’s House of Lights), long vacations can be few and far between. For the past 20 or more years, Nancy and I have taken shorter vacations. We call them mini-moons, 3- and 4-day escapes, often to the Outer Banks. We took another mini-moon last week to the coast, but the Virginia coast. Deltaville, to be exact. I had spent a lot of time in … [Read more...]

Deltaville: What to Do

October 6, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Fish, that’s what, and maybe crab a little. Still, you can’t fish every waking hour, though I’d like to try some day. But there are lots of other things to do and see in Deltaville. For starters, there is The Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park, home to the Nationally registered historic boat, the F.D. Crockett. Situated on 36 acres crossing both the … [Read more...]

Life on a Pier

October 6, 2022 by Jim Brewer

One of my favorite things to do on this earth is fish from the end of a pier, preferably in salt water. First, it soothes the soul, and second, you never know what you might catch. My first experience with pier fishing came on Uncle’s Sidney’s pier on Bogue Sound in Morehead City, NC, across from Atlantic Beach. I fished and crabbed there for hours on end. I never caught anything big – … [Read more...]

  Soapy Water

October 6, 2022 by Jim Brewer

One drawback to a vacation stay on the Middle Peninsula is dealing with the water. First, it tastes bad – it sorta’ smells. It most definitely alters the taste of coffee, and you really have to be thirsty to drink a glass straight from the tap. The second problem is taking a bath. If you hop in the shower and put soap on your hair or body, it stays there. The water does not rinse away the … [Read more...]

  Ice Cube Tray Pancakes

October 6, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Sure, a stack of pancakes sounds nice. Maybe even a couple dozen for a brunch. But sometimes you don’t want half of IHOP’s inventory. Sometimes you might want just a couple of pancakes. Maybe even just one instead of toast. As best I know, there is no recipe on the back of a pancake box for one flap jack. But there is a way to make just 1 or 2 or 3 pancakes – or however many you feel like. … [Read more...]

It Was Popeyes

October 6, 2022 by Jim Brewer

I wrote last week about getting a great Chicken Sandwich from Bojangles at Zion Crossroads, but there is no Bojangles near Spring Creek. It was Popeyes. Popeyes, of course, is an American multinational chain of fried chicken fast food restaurants that was formed during 1972 in New Orleans, Louisiana and headquartered in Miami. They have nearly 3,000 restaurants across the United … [Read more...]
