A Golf Ball for Duffers

January 5, 2023 by Jim Brewer

The golf pros endorse this ball or that one because of spin and that they perform better on the greens. The greens? When the pros speak of greens, they mean hitting the ball close to the flagstick on no worse than the second shot. It sometimes takes me that many to get to ladies’ tees. They also may suggest another brand because it goes high, spins on command, and responds well to wedges. All … [Read more...]

Publix – A Most Friendly Store

January 5, 2023 by Jim Brewer

We have lots of grocery shopping choices here in Charlottesville, but we don’t have a Publix, and I for one wish we did. My first shopping experience with a Publix store was in Myrtle Beach. It happened to be the closest store to my brother’s condo and, naturally, I made several trips. I was totally amazed in one visit when I saw the meat department manager out in the aisles chatting with … [Read more...]

5-Cent Bags

January 5, 2023 by Jim Brewer

It hit the grocery store fans on January 1. There is now a 5-cent fee on those little brown plastic bags, and many customers were caught off guard. Some though the grocery stores were simply gouging while others argued with store cashiers about the fairness of it all. A few remembered the county had so decreed nearly a year ago. And now customers must pay a nickel for every bag they stuff their … [Read more...]

Ground Turkey Soup

January 5, 2023 by Jim Brewer

I was trying for turkey chili, but it ended up more like a ground turkey soup – and it was good. After ballooning in weight from Christmas to New Years, I was going for something healthy. Ground turkey is healthy – very little fat and not enough calories to put weight on a spider. Sort of feeling my way through the process, I began by sautéing 2 stalks of chopped celery and about a half of chopped … [Read more...]

Things are Slowing Down

January 5, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Saltwater fishing opportunities are limited in January and February.  Only the most hardcore anglers can deal with the weather. Water temperatures are now in the mid-40’s. The Virginia Bay rockfish season closed January 31st. Before it ended, anglers took advantage and caught lots of large fish. In the winter, big ocean rockfish begin to school up in the Chesapeake Bay as they stage … [Read more...]

All About Grits

December 30, 2022 by Jim Brewer

(This message comes to you from GRITS, “Girls Raised In The South”)   As I sat at the Waffle House putting salt, pepper, and a little Tabasco on my grits, I couldn't help but see the young lady sitting a couple chairs from me dumping half a cup of sugar on her grits. What? Am I eating them wrong? I had to look it up and thought you'd enjoy reading what I learned about … [Read more...]

The Amazing Pineapple Tool

December 30, 2022 by Jim Brewer

I used it this morning and I’m still not sure exactly how the thing works. It’s a Pineapple Tool made by a company named Imusa. This stainless-steel product makes short work of a usually difficult-to-prepare pineapple. It peels, cores, and slices the pineapple in one step. It will also cut wedges if you’d like. It’s simply amazing. I really enjoy pineapples (apple pines, my children called … [Read more...]

Evaporated Corn Pudding

December 30, 2022 by Jim Brewer

There are two things I most remember about evaporated milk. First, it was the creamer for my Mom and Dad’s morning coffee. There was always a little can of Carnation Evaporated Milk in the refrigerator with two small holes punched in the top, and my folks used that along with some sugar for their coffee. The second memory involves my Uncle Jim’s recipe for homemade ice cream. Instead of milk … [Read more...]

Bojangles? Why Not?

December 30, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Just back from a long drive from Atlanta, I didn’t want to cook anything for dinner. So, pizza or fried chicken? We flipped a coin, it was pizza, but Nancy over-ruled the coin toss and said, “Get chicken. I don’t care what the penny said.” Hopping in the car again after a 510-mile jaunt up I-85 and Route 29, I ordered a box of chicken at KFC, original, of course. But they were all out - not of … [Read more...]
