Invasive House Sparrows

January 26, 2023 by Jim Brewer

I have a fly-through bowl feeder just outside our den window, primarily to entertain Foster, our parakeet. Foster chirps and tweets and hops from bar to bar in her cage when the various birds fly in and out for a bit of seed. Something that got my attention, however, was that the house sparrows dominated other birds of that size, most notably my bluebirds. I didn’t realize how aggressive … [Read more...]

Tuna and Walleye

January 26, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Doing outdoor reports this year is like handing out “Frying With Lard” brochures at a Weight Watcher’s Convention. It’s pretty slim pickings out there. The giant bluefin tuna re still frolicking off the Outer Banks and walleye are gearing up to spawn in freshwater. In the Bay, some huge rockfish remain, though it’s catch and release until June. Small stripers and specks are hitting in … [Read more...]

Good Golly Miss Molly

January 19, 2023 by Jim Brewer

His name was Richard Wayne Penniman. We all knew him as Little Richard, one of the most dynamic entertainers of all time and an idol of Boomers everywhere. Richard Penniman was born in Macon, Ga, the third of twelve children of Leva and Charles Penniman, a church deacon and brick mason who sold a little moonshine on the side. The youngster was dubbed L’il Richard by his family because of his … [Read more...]

Bodo’s: An Excellent Choice

January 19, 2023 by Jim Brewer

I happened to be in the parking lot behind Bodo’s on Preston Avenue this week and could see in the back of the restaurant where all the workers were busy assembling and serving up the famous Bodo’s Bagels. It was like watching a symphony. Each worker moved quickly and precisely to and from their stations. One delivered a fresh batch of bagels from the oven while another sliced the bagels and … [Read more...]

Ecolution Micro-wave Popcorn Popper

January 19, 2023 by Jim Brewer

My Nancy likes popcorn, often on a Sunday afternoon while she’s watching a Hallmark Movie or busy wrapping presents. She wraps a lot of presents. Somehow, I have earned the honor of being Chief Popcorn Popper. I figure if she’ll do all the laundry and keep the house in order, making a batch of popcorn is the least I can do. Usually, I retrieve the old Whirly-Pop Popcorn Popper from the basement … [Read more...]

Kroger Crows

January 19, 2023 by Jim Brewer

They must like to shop at Kroger’s. Otherwise, why do so many crows gather in flocks near Kroger’s. Sometimes every tree limb and light pole in the lot have crow claws clinging to them. I have noticed this phenomenon for the past several years. This morning, there must have been 100 or more crows chatting away about whatever crows chat about. But then, they break up into small groups – there is … [Read more...]

Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Bars

January 19, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Nancy wanted some more oatmeal. She eats it often for breakfast, so I bought her a box when I went to the store. Except, I bought old fashioned oats – the original whole grain variety and she likes the oatmeal you can cook in a couple minutes. So, I went back and bought what she wanted, but now I was the proud owner of a box of Old-Fashioned Oats, and I eat eggs for breakfast. I probably should … [Read more...]

The Best Meal in Town

January 19, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Okay, Brewer. It’s your last meal. We caught you pulling the tags off two bed pillows without authorization and the warden’s going to throw the switch in the morning. What do you want to eat, and it has to be from a restaurant in Charlottesville? But those tags were sticking out of the pillowcase, and they were from My Pillows.com!  And I used the Promo Code!  It doesn’t … [Read more...]

Happy 2023

January 19, 2023 by Jim Brewer

By Nancy B   Saying farewell to 2022 and filled with hope for 2023 makes my heart sing.  Yes, we’ll have some challenges, maybe disappointments, but also the excitement of new adventures and anticipations of great things is on the horizon. Industry experts anticipate a year of calming hues and warm neutrals which sounds nice, wouldn’t you agree? Sherwin Williams, Behr, and Benjamin … [Read more...]

All Quiet on the Bay Front

January 19, 2023 by Jim Brewer

It’s pretty quiet out there on the Chesapeake Bay. Lots of fish have migrated into the ocean, but they’ll return when the spring sun warms things up. In the meantime, most of what little fishing is being done is for catch and release rock-fishing. Live eels are working best for the big fellas, lots in the 40pound class. Tautogs are biting – it seems they always bite. But not many are … [Read more...]
