Don’t Put Off Your Home Lighting To-Do’s

August 17, 2023 by Jim Brewer

By Nancy Bs Computers, what are they good for? Reminds me of a song from 1970, though I didn’t agree with its message. We’ve had visits from our computer guys this week, too many visits in fact. We’ve become so dependent upon computers and when issues arise, we’re ready to go back to writing orders by hand! I’m sure some people think the same way and become discouraged about having home … [Read more...]

Some Like it Hot

August 17, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Hot summer weather? Bring it on, say my four tomato vines. They have survived the 90-degree afternoons and have actually picked up steam. I am now gathering tomatoes every day. I have two vines that are pounding out smaller tomatoes, about the size of a tangerine, and I have yet to find a single blemish and – so far – no critters have pecked away and ruined my fruits. I also have a cherry-type … [Read more...]

The Threat of Alabama Bass

August 17, 2023 by Jim Brewer

By Bruce Ingram   If there is a common topic among the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources’ (DWR) regional fisheries managers, it is their concerns about the presence—and spread—of Alabama bass. Scott Smith, who is based at the DWR Region 2 office in Forest, Virginia, is no different. “Alabama bass have now been found at Philpott, Buggs Island, and Martinsville Reservoir and … [Read more...]

The Flags are Flying

August 17, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Billfish flags, that is. From the Norfolk Canyon off the Virginia Coast to the blue waters out of Hatteras, boats are hooking up with blue marlin, white marlin, and sailfish. Last week, several boats out of Oregon Inlet had more than 10 billfish releases. Along with the “bills”, first mates were pulling good numbers of dolphin and wahoo and some tuna across the stern. Elsewhere on the Outer … [Read more...]

A Jukebox and a Vanilla Soda

August 10, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Anyone over the age of 50 knows first-hand what a jukebox was. But ask a youngster today if he or she wants a nickel for the jukebox, and you’ll get a blank stare. Boomers and jukeboxes grew up together and some of us are here because of jukeboxes, which brought our moms and dads together. In restaurants, at dance halls, at swimming pools, soda shops and fountains, there were jukeboxes. Some … [Read more...]

Cooking Long John Silver’s Chicken

August 10, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Nancy and I are huge fans of Long John Silver’s. In days gone by, on a typical Sunday night, my wife would send me along with a twenty-dollar bill to Long John Silver’s on Emmet Street where I returned with a basket of fish, chicken, slaw, and hush puppies. We loved their chicken and their fish. Then they up and left town! The closest Long John’s now is in Orange, but a 90-mile rounds … [Read more...]

Atticus “Finches”

August 10, 2023 by Jim Brewer

While we have a few of Atticus Finch’s mockingbirds, we have a gazillion house finches. I expect I have more finches per square foot in my yard than anyone else in North America. I have over a dozen that camp out at my front yard feeder and twice that many in the back. Fortunately, they are little fellows and don’t eat that much or I’d have to take out a second mortgage to buy bird … [Read more...]

Beware of the James

August 10, 2023 by Jim Brewer

The James is a powerful and dangerous river. Last week, an Albemarle County family lost three children to drowning after a fateful attempt to swim. I can personally attest to the strength of this mighty river. When I first moved to Charlottesville, I asked about river fishing in these parts and was told to go to the James. It was a beautiful, charming river and I fished from the bank, … [Read more...]

August 10, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Letters, We Get Letters We get lots and lots of letters Dear, Perry, would you be so kind To fill a request and sing the songs we love best   Geezers will recognize the lyrics above as a theme song for the Perry Como Show where he sang requested songs. Perry got lots and lots of letters, but us? Not so much. Recently, there has been a rash of thievery, mostly … [Read more...]
