Soup’s On

August 23, 2023 by Jim Brewer

I don’t often make soup. That’s because I consider soup a medicine, like aspirin or NyQuil, for when you’re sick. When it’s dinnertime, I want meat and potatoes. But Nancy likes soup. She likes soup even when she’s not sick. So, I decided to make soup. The easiest possible recipe I found, other than opening a can of Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup (which I considered as an option) was one for … [Read more...]

Restore Wildlife in Your Back Yard

August 23, 2023 by Jim Brewer

By Molly Kirk When you make decisions about how to maintain your yard and property this fall, keep in mind that there are many different species of wildlife that call your yard home. While raking leaves and mowing tall grass might create a neater “look” for your yard, leaving your yard with a somewhat messier appearance creates valuable food and shelter for not only birds, but also pollinators, … [Read more...]

BBQ Time!

August 23, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Panic! I just used the last of my Charlie Mills BBQ Sauce Seasonings. I’m down to one pint jar of the splendid Carolina concoction in the fridge. In a few days I’ll have more because I just ordered two more bags. I used to make my own BBQ sauce, Carolina style, of course. But when I stumbled on Charlie Mills secret blend of peppers and spices, I no longer have to empty my spice cabinet to make … [Read more...]

First-Ever Virginia Record Saugeye

August 23, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Virginia now has an official State Record Saugeye.  Mike Miller used a crankbait to net the 6-pounder on the Staunton River. The record fish measured 26.25-inches long, with a 14-inch girth at Bobcat’s Bait and Tackle in Clarksville, Va. The prized catch was inspected by a state fisheries biologist, and the Virginia records keeping committee reviewed the record applications and verified … [Read more...]

Lots of Flounder

August 23, 2023 by Jim Brewer

As summer draws to a close, the saltwater fishing scene in Virginia is heating up. Especially for flounder. Flounder fishing has been excellent, with many fish exceeding the minimum size limit of 16.5 inches. The best areas to look for flounder are the coastal wrecks, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (CBBT), and the lower bay shoals. Live bait, such as spot, croaker, or minnows, is the … [Read more...]

Buffalo Bob and Howdy Doody

August 17, 2023 by Jim Brewer

(A repeat, but worth it!)   Hey kids! What time is it? Breathes there a Boomer who doesn’t know the answer to that question? If it was Buffalo Bob Smith asking, and it was a weekday afternoon on NBC in the 1950’s, it was most definitely “Howdy Doody time.” Boomers remember the Howdy Doody Show as much for the quality of life during those years as for the quality of this popular … [Read more...]

The Amazing Pentatonix

August 17, 2023 by Jim Brewer

I am not a big fan of going to concerts – even at JPJ and especially not to 22,000 seat venues such at the Jiffy Lube Stadium in Northern Virginia. But I am a huge fan of Pentatonix. We own all their Christmas CDs. They are an amazing group of acapella singers. When we found out that they would be performing just 80 miles north, we got tickets - third row, middle seats in the orchestra section … [Read more...]

Deep Fried Okra

August 17, 2023 by Jim Brewer

We are enjoying a bumper crop of okra this summer. Our fresh produce bins in the fridge runneth over. Nancy has a few plants in her above ground garden cage, and I have a dozen or so healthy plants in my garden. We have to pick okra every day or the pods get too large to eat. Our favorite way to enjoy fresh okra is to cut the pods into small pieces, roll them in corn meal ad pan fry them. But I … [Read more...]

Check Out A2D Appliances

August 17, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Elaine Callahan, loyal Cville Buzz reader and frog expert, shot me an email with a recommended business. Says Elaine, “Consider visiting A2D Appliances in the Forest Lakes strip mall, near Food Lion. It occupies the former Tuesday Morning site. After looking around at the appliances, ask for Adolpho, the owner/manager, to see their business model. Fabulous prices because there are … [Read more...]
