A Fowl Round of Golf

March 9, 2018 by Jim Brewer

The state bird of Hawaii, at least on the island of Kauai, is the chicken. So it was no surprise when I was greeted on the driving range with a Rhode Island Red Rooster. This chicken could talk. He asked me if I had ever played the course before and I sad “No, my first time.” The chicken then clucked about while he watched me hit a few balls. He asked me how many balls I had brought with me. I … [Read more...]

Kauai: Beauty in the Extreme

March 9, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Our last island stop was Kauai, known as the Garden Island. It is a place of extreme beauty. We spent a day and a half on Kauai after docking at Nawiliwili Bay. I like that name – Na-Wili-Wili. I like the place, too. Yesterday I played golf, and then Nancy and I went on one of the recommended tours with a train ride through a working plantation and then a Luau. The plantation tour was … [Read more...]

The Egg-Man Cometh

March 1, 2018 by Jim Brewer

I’ve been spending a little more for eggs, recently. That’s because the cage free eggs are fresher and better tasting, so I splurge a little when I go to the store for eggs. There was a time when the cage free eggs came to us. We had an Egg-Man. His name was Bill Handley. Bill had a small farm west of Lewisburg, WV and raised cattle and poultry. He was a member of our church and … [Read more...]

Hand Me Down Lights

March 1, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Each January, my wife Nancy and I fly to Dallas for the Lighting Show. I am her faithful and constant companion as she works with her reps to see all the new styles offered by the lighting companies. Nancy looks for new and exciting pieces to bring to her showroom at Nancy B’s House of Lights. But once the new pieces arrive, they need a home on the ceiling, which is already filled with … [Read more...]

The Color of Spring

March 1, 2018 by Jim Brewer

My resident male bluebird has outdone himself this spring. In the past week, he has changed from a beautiful blue into a drop dead gorgeous blue – a blue that could never be duplicated on any artist’s palette. He is stunning. Also, at my feeder I have noticed that the gold finches are just starting to gain color. A hint of yellow is peaking through what were once olive gray feathers. … [Read more...]

Pigs In A Blanket

March 1, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Sometimes it takes a child or two in the house to remind us old fogies that food doesn’t have to be fancy to be enjoyed. And sometimes it’s nice to have fun things to eat. Like Pigs In A Blanket. Pigs in a Blanket are – perhaps next to pizzas – among kids’ all time favorite meals. And they taste pretty good to adults, as well. PIBs are nothing more than a hot dog and a slice of … [Read more...]

Hawaii, Hawaii

March 1, 2018 by Jim Brewer

As you are reading this edition of CvilleBuzz, I will be in the air speeding across the country on my way to Hawaii. On March 3, Nancy and I will have been married 50 years and we will celebrate with a cruise of the Hawaiian Islands. We’ll fly from Baltimore to Houston, then on to Honolulu, where we will board a Norwegian Liner and tour the islands. We will also have several tours of … [Read more...]

Saltwater News

March 1, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Virginia’s ocean bottom fishing for sea bass and tautogs is still good when weather permits. Unfortunately our short sea bass season closed on Wednesday. North Carolina tuna fishing is excellent when boats can get out. Blue fin tunas have generated most of the excitement. Boats fishing out of Oregon Inlet are finding a few blue fin tuna in the 250 to 600 pound range. Yellow fin tuna … [Read more...]

Yellow Perch On The Move

March 1, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Yellow perch are one of my favorite fish. They are beautifully colored, they are second to none in flavor and they are usually the first fish of spring to spawn and feed. The yellow perch run is now on in the Chickahominy River, the Potomac, the Occoquan, Rappahannock and James. The fish are also becoming active in lakes such as Anna, the Chick, Lake Moomaw and others. Lake Orange, … [Read more...]

Big Money in Babysitting

February 22, 2018 by Jim Brewer

There weren’t many ways to earn money as a Boomer teenager. Allowances were meager, maybe 50c a week. This was before child labor laws, where kids were required to do things like mow the lawn, load dishwashers, tend to younger brothers and sisters and help weed the garden for a lousy 50 cents a week. Summer offered some respite with a few lawn-mowing gigs, but there was often intense competition … [Read more...]
