Shad Begin to Stir

March 29, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Shad are making their move into Virginia freshwater. The herring, hickory shad, white perch and striped bass are now in the waters above Key Bridge in DC. Shad and herring have also arrived on the Rappahannock River at the U.S. Route 1 Bridge in Fredericksburg, with good concentrations of shad under the bridge and upstream in the rapids. Herring are also present in force. The Mattapponi and … [Read more...]

Go Fly A Kite

March 22, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Boomer kids divided everything into months. January was noted for New Year’s Day and celebrations before heading back to school. February was cold, which meant snow, which meant school closings, which meant tearing down hills sides in a genuine Flexible Flyer sled and hoping for the best. March meant wind and wind meant kites. Kites were a big deal back then. Every kid had one. Some could … [Read more...]

Recognizing Special People

March 22, 2018 by Jim Brewer

By Nancy Brewer at Nancy B’s   Aloha! This is a word that means both hello and goodbye. It is also a word for love, affection and peace. While lighting is my passion and love, the love of my life is my husband. We celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary March 3rd and celebrated in Hawaii on the Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America this past week. When people ask the secret of 50 … [Read more...]

Great Golf Quotes

March 22, 2018 by Jim Brewer

These have been around for a while, but they are classics and describe the game of golf pretty well. - Eighteen holes of match play will teach you more about your foe than 18 years of dealing with him across a desk: Grantland Rice - Golf appeals to the idiot in us and the child. Just how childlike golf players become is proven by their frequent inability to count past five: … [Read more...]

Backyard Visitors

March 22, 2018 by Jim Brewer

The goal of every bird watcher is to see a new face at the feeder or in the backyard. We love our regulars - the cardinals, bluebirds, robins, chickadees, the jays and other year round residents - but to see a visitor on occasion is really exciting. It happened to me early this week. Through the kitchen window, I saw dozens of small birds in the birdbath – at least 20. They looked … [Read more...]

Now We’re Cooking: Baked Salmon

March 22, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Salmon has become something of a staple at Chez Brewer. It is healthy, though wild caught salmon is healthier than farm raised, and it is fairly economical, at about $9 a pound. We have it every couple weeks or so, but you can quickly get in a rut with the same-old, same-old recipes. I saw a recipe recently that I followed – sort of – and it was as good as it gets when it comes to salmon. It’s … [Read more...]

Deer Harvest Stable

March 22, 2018 by Jim Brewer

The results from the 2017/18 big game harvest are now in. Bear hunters had a record year, deer hunters shot about as many as the previous year and the fall turkey kill was off considerably. Bear hunters tagged a total of 2,861 animals, 17% more animals than the previous year’s record total. This number is indicative of the rapidly increasing bear population in Virginia. The animals are … [Read more...]

Thar’ She Blows

March 22, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Four nor’easters in three weeks? That’s just about killed any action on the saltwater front. There are some ‘togs off the Virginia coast, but it’s been hard to get to them in 10 foot swells. Action on the Outer Banks has been limited to a few keeper pups near The Point and good catches of blackfin tuna out of Oregon Inlet, when the fleet can sail. Give it a week and things should pick … [Read more...]

The First (And Best) Talent Show

March 15, 2018 by Jim Brewer

They are trying to resurrect American Idol. Good luck with that. I saw the first episode, and instead of focusing on talent, they do touchy, feel-good background stuff about the performers. It’s not who the best singer is, it’s who has the best, most politically correct sob story. They’ll have to get along without me for however long the show lasts – I’ll give it one season. But … [Read more...]

Travel In Style

March 15, 2018 by Jim Brewer

It was our 50th Anniversary, no small feat, and we wanted to celebrate in style – a once in a lifetime trip. We considered the Bahamas and Mexico, but Nancy had gone to Hawaii two years ago and was enthralled with the beautiful islands. The thought of playing golf on one of those courses you see on TV in February was enough to put me on board with a cruise or trip to the Rainbow … [Read more...]
