Ants: All You Can Eat Buffet

April 5, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Last weekend in Charlotte while playing golf, I noticed an extraordinary number of birds feeding along the concrete cart paths. Upon closer inspection, I discovered the reason. Ants. The little fellows were out in force and the birds were taking advantage. What ants lack in size, as far as a meal is concerned, they make up for by numbers and quality. Ants have more bang for the buck than almost … [Read more...]

Big Bass at Anna

April 5, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Lots of big bass are now coming to the scales at Lake Anna, including a 9-10 bucket mouth caught by James Maupin. Big bass are taking crankbaits, spinnerbaits, plastic worms and topwater baits. Secondary points in the creeks are still producing a few good fish, with the best areas being from the Route 208 Bridge down lake. Crappie are biting well around shallow beaver lodges, submerged brush and … [Read more...]

Charley The Tuna

April 5, 2018 by Jim Brewer

So, what has been happening out on the water so far? In addition to the great bluefin fishing out of Oregon Inlet, both yellowfin tuna and some bigeye tuna have been caught. Blackfin tuna are being caught out of Hatteras. As early as late January, big red drum were being caught out of the Hatteras surf during that early spring we had. Typically, about 2 weeks after that bite starts, we get them … [Read more...]

The Days of Pegged Pants

March 29, 2018 by Jim Brewer

“Hurry son! You’ll be late for school!” “I’m trying Mom. I can’t get my pants on. I think the pants legs shrunk!” Such might have been a morning conversation in any number of homes in the 1950’s. That’s because a certain fad called pegged pants swept all of Boomerhood, causing both young men and women to truly struggle in order to get their pants on. Pegged pants had their … [Read more...]

Tips On Raising Chickens

March 29, 2018 by Jim Brewer

By Sherman Shifflett (Intro by Jim Brewer: More and more folks, even those in urban areas, are raising chickens. The difference between a fresh and a store bought egg is night and day. Plus, they’re fun to have around. Here are some notes from Sherman Shifflett, a regular CvilleBuzz contributor, about his experiences raising chickens.)   Except when I was in college and in … [Read more...]

Chopstix

March 29, 2018 by Jim Brewer

How many Chinese or Oriental restaurants do we have in Charlottesville? A thousand? No, not quite that many, but sometimes it seems that way. There is certainly one in every strip mall in town, and most I’ve tried are pretty good. Our favorite Chinese Restaurant used to be the Flaming Wok. I knew the owner and always enjoyed his food and service, but pending development shut down his restaurant … [Read more...]

Super Good Asparagus

March 29, 2018 by Jim Brewer

It’s asparagus season, an early spring vegetable. I saw some beautiful asparagus in Kroger’s recently for 99-cents a pound. It is often 2.99 and sometimes even 3.99 a pound, so I bought a bundle. Asparagus is fairly easy to cook, you can even eat it raw, like celery. I often put mine in the oven at 400, sprinkle on a little salt and pepper and olive oil, cook for 10 minutes and eat it that way. … [Read more...]

Another Year, Another Nest

March 29, 2018 by Jim Brewer

We have had bluebirds nesting in our backyard every year (except one) for the past 15 years. For years, we never saw a bluebird in or near our yard, then one spring we saw a couple at our birdbath and soon after, they began nesting. There has been a pair of blues hanging around all winter. I assume it’s the same pair that pulled off two broods last summer. Early on, they checked out the … [Read more...]

Expect the Specks

March 29, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Virginia anglers need four or five warm days in a row to kick off the speckled trout and puppy drum seasons inside Lynnhaven and Rudee inlets. A few warm days will lure bait into the shallows and the predators will follow. Cold, inshore water is holding up the big red drum bite. But a few warm days will take care of that as well. Then look for reports to start coming in from the Outer Banks of … [Read more...]

South River Report

March 29, 2018 by Jim Brewer

The South River Fly Shop reports that the South River in Waynesboro has been fishing well for the past two weeks with some great Smoky Sedge Caddis hatches in the late mornings. Size 16 Black Elk Hair Caddis and variations have been working on active fish. The hatch intensity varies from day to day, but should continue for another week or more. Water levels have improved slightly with the recent … [Read more...]
