Don’t Forget About Sirloin Steaks

November 16, 2017 by Jim Brewer

I was going to do a vegetable beef stir-fry. Most any beef will work in this quick-fry dish, but I happened to be rummaging through the meat department at Sam’s Club and saw a pair of very nice looking top sirloin steaks, and they were on sale! That evening as I was cooking the beef in my wok, I had a little sample. Damn! It was good. I have been in a steak rut, of sorts. Nancy and I have … [Read more...]

Save Big Bucks with VSGA Card

November 16, 2017 by Jim Brewer

One of the knocks against golf these days is that it’s expensive. It can be, but it doesn’t have to be. My golfing Amigos and I have been wearing out our VSGA VIP cards, making the game a lot less expensive and a lot more fun since we’re playing lots of different courses. A VIP basically allows a golfer to have free greens fees with a cart rental. Looking back over 2017, I have used my Virginia … [Read more...]

A November 11th to Remember

November 9, 2017 by Jim Brewer

It was Nov. 11, 1956. I was 12 years old, soon to be 13, and it was the opening of hunting season in West Virginia. In 1956, there were more albino armadillos in West Virginia than deer, so hunting season to me meant quail and rabbits. I had my own shotgun, a single barrel .410 and I was going hunting. November 11, Veteran’s Day, meant that my Dad would take the day off. He and Melvin Crantz … [Read more...]

A Louisa County Buck

November 9, 2017 by Jim Brewer

By Sherman Shifflett   Robert Runnett took this handsome buck last Monday morning in Louisa County. It has 13 points and an inside spread of 20 1/2" – a very good mass and a huge body close to 200-lbs. The buck had one split brow tine and three kickers on G2. Robert dropped the nice deer with a crossbow. Robert also took a bear on Saturday. Robert is the son of Lloyd Runnett, who ran … [Read more...]

Bully for Beach Bully

November 9, 2017 by Jim Brewer

I had waited an entire year to wolf down a Beach Bully roast beef sandwich. When I had worked my way to the head of the line during last week’s Oyster Festival in Urbanna, I figured while I was there, why not two? So I got two sandwiches, doused them with the special Beach Bully BBQ sauce and savored each bite. There are dozens and dozens of food vendors each year at the Oyster Festival and I … [Read more...]

Fall Landscaping Tips

November 9, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Fall is the time for local homeowners to prepare their yards and gardens for the coming winter and upcoming spring. Tending to a few simple tasks in the next month or two assures a vibrant and healthy lawn. Yet, fall can be a busy time for many homeowners. There are school activities, preparations for the holidays and the daylight hours get progressively shorter. Need a little help? Then call … [Read more...]

Road Trip To Urbanna

November 9, 2017 by Jim Brewer

About 15 years ago, I went to my first Virginia Oyster Festival in Urbanna. I have been going since. The Oyster Festival is one of the best two-day parties in Virginia and the 56th festival is now in the books. Always held on the first full weekend in November the festival was created as a fundraiser for the local fire department, and it still is. Plus, it has put the sleepy little village of … [Read more...]

If you hurry, there are still tickets available to see the incomparable Beach Boys. America’s favorite male group will be appearing at the Altria Theater in Richmond on Sunday, November 12 at 7PM. As The Beach Boys mark more than a half-century of making music, the group continues to ride the crest of a wave unequalled in America's musical history.
