Coming Attractions: Bizarre Bazaar

November 21, 2017 by Jim Brewer

For the past 15 years or so, my wife, often my daughter and their assorted lady friends from multiple states gather in Richmond for something called The Bizarre Bazaar. During the event, each lady participates in a shopping tournament. Whoever buys the most wins the award. Don’t ask. It’s a lady thing. Some say it’s not really the Christmas season until The Bizarre Bazaar occurs, and it’s just … [Read more...]

Chicken Tenders From Vocelli’s

November 21, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Occasionally, our next-door neighbors, a young couple, will allow us to babysit for them. Their three year old son, Liam, is a joy to be around, and since our children, the inconsiderate trolls, have moved far away, Nancy and I need a little grand parenting activity every now and then to shake off the rust. So after work last Wednesday, we went to their house to babysit and decided to order out … [Read more...]

Bluebirds Are Shopping

November 21, 2017 by Jim Brewer

We saw our resident pair of bluebirds this morning. They were checking out nesting sites. Already! I feel confident it’s the same pair that nested three times in our various bluebird boxes last summer. Funny, after the third clutch had fledged, the blues disappeared. Didn’t see them for a couple months, then they returned for a bath and a sip of water during the drought. As I always say, if you … [Read more...]

Ham, Mac & Cheese

November 21, 2017 by Jim Brewer

One of the fun things about cooking is just using what you may have on hand in the fridge or cupboard and having it come out well. Sometimes, as my wife Nancy will attest, my experiments are not successful, but I pulled one off last week. I had two packs of Smithfield Diced Ham that I had purchased in order to make omelets for our gang at Urbanna. But my omelets got bumped, so I still had the … [Read more...]

Chain, Chain, Chains!

November 16, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Winter’s coming. There will likely be a snowfall or two sending all of Central Virginia to Kroger’s to buy every carton of milk in sight and then retreat into hibernation. The radio and TV people will say, “Stay home unless you have to get out because there is – oh no – snow on the roads.” I took my driver’s license on a day when there was 13-inches of ice and snow on the highway. I passed … [Read more...]

Cool Weather Equals Good Fishing

November 16, 2017 by Jim Brewer

The Nolin Family from Vermont at Oregon Inlet   From the upper reaches of the bay down through the Carolinas, anglers are doing better and better with stripers following the recent cold snap. From Nags Head, Capt. Reese Stecher reports: “The Stripers gave us the slip for a few days. So, we went after the Drum and they were biting. The cold weathered helped us out and we figured out … [Read more...]

Rivers Looking Good

November 16, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Shenandoah River The river is at full pool and clear. Smallmouth and largemouth have been hitting jig 'n pigs, live minnows, crankbaits and plastic grubs.   Rappahannock River There is good crappie fishing to be had just below the city, in the brush along the banks. Small minnows and tiny jigs are the ticket. Bass anglers are catching an occasional largemouth. Catfish anglers are … [Read more...]

Collard Greens

November 16, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Finally, it frosted. It was halfway through November, but at last there was frost on the pumpkins, and on my collard patch as well. As every Southerner knows, you never eat collards until after the first frost. It’s something about that frost that brings out the sweetness in what are easily the best tasting greens on the planet. Last August, after my cucumbers had gone belly up in my lower … [Read more...]

9-Year Old Takes a Deer

November 16, 2017 by Jim Brewer

I know of a nine-year old boy who recently shot a deer. Pretty impressive, huh? But wait, there’s more. He shot a six-point buck, certainly not an easy task. He also shot it with a pistol, a muzzle-loader pistol. How about that for impressive? Cville Buzz contributor, Sherman Shifflett, said that young Gil Barlow’s deer was taken on Wednesday, November 8 near the Cuckoo community in Louisa … [Read more...]

Wayside Takeout & Catering

November 16, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Not long ago, on a Sunday night following a week of eating healthy, I said, “What the hell. Let’s get some fried chicken from Wayside. Nancy quickly seconded the motion and I was off, clear across town, to get their chicken. Trouble was, they were closed on Sundays, and I had to settle for KFC, which ranks a distant second to Wayside in the fried chicken department. Wayside Takeout & … [Read more...]
