Growing Okra Trees

September 13, 2018 by Jim Brewer

I don’t have okra plants. I have okra trees. Several are over 8 feet tall. I have to pull them over and stand on tiptoes to snip off any ripe pods. But I’m not complaining. I have had a bumper crop of okra this summer, and they are still producing! Okra and peppers, I have discovered, are two vegetables that don’t like cool weather. The later you can wait to plant the okra, the better they do. … [Read more...]

Sweet Pea Salad

September 13, 2018 by Jim Brewer

When planning menus, I usually don’t have a problem with meats or the main course; it’s the sides that I struggle with. I get tired of tossed salads all the time, though they are good for you. Recently I tried a green pea salad and it tuned out well – a nice change of pace. There are many recipes for sweet pea salads, but I went for the quickest and easiest in preparation. I started with two … [Read more...]

Hey! Back Me Up, Here!

September 13, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Sportsmen face many obstacles in their outdoor careers. Driving a Jeep down a muddy, rut-filled logging road deep in a grouse covert comes to mind. But that’s not the most difficult challenge. Stepping squarely on a hornet’s nest while creeping in on a spring gobbler is no walk in the park, but worse can happen. An outdoors type might even find himself or herself between a mother bear and her cubs … [Read more...]

End Zone Vegetarian Pizza

September 13, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Pizza toppings? For me, it’s bacon, sausage, steak, pepperoni, ham and any other topping suitable for one of the world’s greatest carnivores. Sometimes I’ll sneak a few mushrooms on if no one is paying attention, but I like meat on my pizzas. Yet….. A few nights ago we had company and I decided on an easy meal of pizzas and wings. “What do you like on your pizza?” was my question, … [Read more...]

Clifty Farm Country Ham

September 13, 2018 by Jim Brewer

I was born in Raleigh, NC and I was raised on country ham. Often, country ham or fat back was the only meat on the table. Sometimes Uncle Sidney would come back from the coast with a bushel of oysters – he tonged them himself - and sometimes we’d have a roasting hen for Sunday dinner, but it was often country ham. Eastern North Carolina was hog country. Many families in the country or outskirts … [Read more...]

Great Saltwater Fishing Halts

September 13, 2018 by Jim Brewer

We were in the midst of some super saltwater action all the way from Chincoteague to Hatteras when Miss Florence decided to visit. Now, anglers along the Carolina coasts are just praying they’ll still have boats and cottages when the dust settles. Sadly, the first major blow generally signals the end of the billfish season, and Florence was a major blow. Marlin and sailfish say “Enough of this … [Read more...]

Red Hot Action at Nags Head

September 6, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Capt. Reese Stecher of Beach Bum Fishing has been putting his clients on a wide variety of fish – and lots of them. The action at Nags Head is red hot. Cobia, apparently, are making their way out of the Chesapeake Bay and have found things to their liking off the Carolina Coast. On Sunday, Reese and party landed keeper cobia, some big stripers, moonfish, Spanish mackerel and bunches of … [Read more...]

See You Later Alligator

September 6, 2018 by Jim Brewer

“That yoot is bad news. He’s a dipstick - gives me the cooties. He can DDT. Let’s cut out and find a boss bash.” As an official Boomer, may I interpret the above? “The youngster – obviously an underclassman – is an idiot and a depressing individual. As far as I’m concerned, he can drop dead – twice! It’s time to leave and find a real party.” Each generation has its own language … [Read more...]

(Blue) Stop Poison Ivy

September 6, 2018 by Jim Brewer

One drawback of being a high handicap golfer such as yours truly is the propensity to spend lots of time in the high grass and along wood edges looking for wayward balls. Two weeks ago, I was doing just that when my left forearm came in contact with a three-leaf monster called poison ivy. I usually don’t get poison ivy, or if I do it’s a mild case. But I had been scratching at that arm for several … [Read more...]
