On Thursday, there were sea mullet and bluefish scattered along the beaches. Pompano were beached at Ramp 48 and a couple of nice drum were caught in Buxton. Frisco anglers put trout in their coolers. Sea mullet were scattered on the beaches from Kitty Hawk to the Inlet. Rough seas have made surf fishing challenging the last few days. The Little Bridge on the Nags Head/Manteo causeway reported … [Read more...]
1956 – A Very Good Year
We had lived in Lewisburg, WV for a year and by now I was becoming acclimated to the friendly little city. I had made lots of friends, I shot my first quail with a .410 shotgun and was fortunate to be young and alive in one of the greatest years of all time – 1956. In 1956, things didn’t cost much. The average price for a new house was $11,700, the average monthly rent was $88, a gallon of gas … [Read more...]
Remembering a Blue Ridge Mountain Father
Frequent CvilleBuzz writer and contributor, Sherman Shifflett, remembers a lifetime of tales and witticisms told by his father, George “Harvey” Shifflett. Sherman decided to write them down as he recalled them. He continued writing until all those the memories turned into a great book – “Remembering a Blue Ridge Mountain Father”. In the newly released paperback edition, Sherman recalls his … [Read more...]
Urban Archery Season: It’s Payback Time
For a year now, they have mowed down our hastas, decimated our vegetable gardens and gnawed on our azalea bushes. Deer, that is. And now it’s payback time, it’s urban archery season even within the city limits of places like Charlottesville, Lynchburg and other cities. From Sept. 1 through October 5, bow hunters with permits and landowner permission can shoot away at the city deer. To be eligible, … [Read more...]

In Virginia, the fall season kicks off on Oct. 4 and runs through the end of the year, giving Virginia anglers lots of opportunities to put a few of these – some of the best eating fish anywhere – on ice. Even if you don’t fish, stripers will soon be in the grocery stores and fish markets and here’s an interesting and different way to prepare them. Several … [Read more...]

Bonefish Fish & Chips
Sunday night dinner? Whip up something in the kitchen or go out for a quick bite? We had had a busy weekend, so Nancy and I decided to let someone else do the cooking, and since we had a coupon from Bonefish Grill for a complimentary entrée for one guest, we headed in that direction. Naturally, we pulled up two stools at the bar where we have found the best possible service. You don’t have to … [Read more...]
A Return To Bamboo
I caught my first fish on a cane pole. It was a 10-foot stalk of ordinary bamboo that had been aged on the side of a tobacco barn. At the tip of the rod, my great aunt, Sister Wall, had attached about 15 feet of ten-pound test, a cork bobber, two split shot and a size 6, long shanked hook. This simple piece of equipment was a fishing machine. The reason? For children, especially, it’s much … [Read more...]

Hurricane Florence Surely has stirred up our local salt waters, but now that things have settled down – it’s spot time. By late September, these hefty spot become very numerous as they pack into … [Read more...]
Tramp the Parakeet
The first summer after we moved to Lewisburg, my family took an extended vacation to North Carolina to visit relatives. We went to Winston Salem and Wilson and Raleigh and spent the last week staying with my Aunt Ann at her cottage at Morehead City, across the sound from Atlantic Beach. Every day, we packed up the car and went to the beach and I have great memories of splashing in the surf, … [Read more...]
