Statue Suggestion

June 21, 2018 by Jim Brewer

In case you haven’t been paying attention, the City of Charlottesville is not happy with their inventory of historical statues. Until a judge ordered otherwise, they had draped a huge black tarp over General Lee and his horse, Traveller. I have a great idea for the City Council. Why not erect a statue of something that is becoming increasingly more common around Charlottesville – that of a … [Read more...]

A Genuine Red-headed Woodpecker

June 21, 2018 by Jim Brewer

I was golfing last week at Lake Monticello where, in addition to watching my balls sail around the course, I keep an eye out for wildlife. There are more deer at the Lake than resident humans, I believe, and lots of birds and animals. But about midway through my round I saw an unfamiliar bird with a brilliant white belly, but a jet-black body. Upon closer inspection, it was a Red-headed … [Read more...]

Fourth of July at Graves Mountain Lodge

June 21, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Looking for a fun way to spend the 4th? Consider a trip to Graves Mountain Lodge in Syria. Each July 4, Jimmy Graves and his family put on a spectacular show. They open their place for visitors with absolutely no admission charge. Young and old alike enjoy the scenery, swimming, hiking, pony riding, face painting and some of the best food in Central Virginia. For purchase, of course, guests can … [Read more...]

Saltwater Options

June 21, 2018 by Jim Brewer

There are plenty of options for Virginia saltwater anglers! Cobia are being caught off Cape Charles and around the bridge tunnel. There are Spadefish around the fourth island. Sheephead are at the fourth island and around pilings. Sea Mullet and croakers are being caught off Kiptopeke and the Latimer Shoals. Want more? Flounder are being caught off the Little Bridge at the CBBT and in The … [Read more...]

The Court Restaurant

June 14, 2018 by Jim Brewer

(Remembering life as a boy in Lewisburg, WV, an amazing town and an amazing time to live)   Recently, I saw a list ranking the Top Ten restaurants in Lewisburg. In 1955, there weren’t ten restaurants in all of Greenbrier County, and there was just one in Lewisburg – the Court Restaurant. Supply and demand restricted the number of eateries in those days. And there was very little demand. … [Read more...]

Guadalajara, Authentically Good

June 14, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Some say there is such a thing as “Authentic Mexican” food. Not being an expert, and barely knowing the difference between a Burrito and a Taco, I really couldn’t say. I enjoy Mexican cuisine on occasion, but my wife Nancy is a rabid fan. And she especially enjoys the food at Guadalajara. A few nights ago, after she accommodated me and went to Bonefish for Fish & Chips, I agreed to eat … [Read more...]

In the Catbird’s Seat

June 14, 2018 by Jim Brewer

Like the swallows of Capistrano, they come back every year. My catbirds. They show up in early April, raise a nest of chicks or two, then they’re off for parts unknown. For the past several years, a pair of catbirds has nested in a hedge behind our house. They are really quite interesting. Some confuse catbirds with cowbirds. They sort of look alike, but catbirds are true songbirds while … [Read more...]

Great Mac Support

June 14, 2018 by Jim Brewer

The world is divided into two groups of people. Those who own and use Macs, and all the others – the PC people. I learned what little – and I stress what little – I know about computers on a Mac. Barbara Livesay, my graphic designer for Virginia Outdoor Weekly, said they were easier to work with and that even someone with a pea for a brain (like me) could use them. So for the past 25 years, I have … [Read more...]

Cowboy Ribeye Steaks

June 14, 2018 by Jim Brewer

When we were in Hawaii celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary, Nancy and I went to Ruth’s Chris Steak House on our last night. We each ordered a steak and they were huge. We gave it our best shot yet couldn’t finish either slab of beef. But the fellow next to us had a steak even larger. It was a Cowboy Ribeye, about a 3 pound cut of meat with the rib bone still attached. He also didn’t finish … [Read more...]

The Lake Monticello Golf Course

June 14, 2018 by Jim Brewer

One good thing about not being a member of a particular country club or golf course is that you get to play lots of different courses – and we have some really nice venues in Central Virginia. One of the best is just a few miles outside Charlottesville – Lake Monticello. The course is challenging, beautiful, and is kept in top condition. The famous golf architect, Buddy Loving, thoughtfully … [Read more...]
