Lovely Weather for A Sleigh Ride Together

January 24, 2019 by Jim Brewer

We had a snow last week. It wasn’t much of a snow, at least by West Virginia standards, but it was enough to close the schools and send kids outdoors to sleigh ride. Watching the dozen or so children sleigh riding behind my house brought back some great memories. Our back yard, the school yard actually, has a gentle hill. It drops maybe 30 feet over a 25 yards distance, and then kids … [Read more...]

A Creasy Greens PhD

January 24, 2019 by Jim Brewer

I feel like I have a PhD in Creasy Greens. A couple weeks back, I did a piece on some Creasy Greens that I had planted from seed last spring. They didn’t sprout until late last fall, but now I have a nice patch. I wasn’t sure how to harvest, when to harvest or how to cook them, but I received lots of advice and information from my CvilleBuzz readers. My cousin, Estelle Hill from Clemmons, … [Read more...]

Another Visit to Ruth’s Chris

January 24, 2019 by Jim Brewer

When we were in Hawaii for our 50thanniversary, Nancy and I decided to splurge and eat our last meal on the islands at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse. It was magnificent. Last week in Dallas at the Lighting Show, we ate there again with the same results – absolutely delicious. Dallas has three Ruth’s Chris locations and I think there are 150 or so in the US. Ruth’s Chris is a great success story in … [Read more...]

Baked Spaghetti

January 24, 2019 by Jim Brewer

I made a fun dish this week – Baked Spaghetti. I’ve done numerous Spaghetti Pies in the past, but this was a little different – and it turned out delicious. Any type of spaghetti is well received, even Vegetarian Spaghetti, but this Baked Spaghetti is a nice change of pace, makes a great dish for a pot luck dinner and kids love it. There are many variations, but here’s how I did my … [Read more...]

A Dandy Downy Encounter

January 24, 2019 by Jim Brewer

I was headed to the back yard with a couple new cakes of suet for my feeders. When I was less than four feet from one of the wire-covered feeders, I saw a little Downy Woodpecker inside, pecking away. I figure he’d hightail it with me that close, but he paid me no mind whatsoever and continued to hammer away at the chunk of suet. I backed off and decided to let him finish his meal before replacing … [Read more...]

Front Pocket Wallets

January 24, 2019 by Jim Brewer

For Christmas this year, Nancy gave me a new billfold. It’s supposed to fit in your front pocket. It’s thinner than a cell phone, nice and compact, and it indeed fits in a front pocket. But how in the world was I supposed to put all my stuff in that tiny wallet? My current wallet is much like that of George Costanza on Seinfeld. It has more stuff inside than a sixth grader’s school backpack. … [Read more...]

A Gutter Garden

January 24, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Don’t have enough space for a garden? According to Deborah Gillespie of Bluefield, WV, that’s no excuse. With the “gutter garden”, you can grow herbs, spices, lettuce, radishes or any number of plants or vegetables. Deborah suggests drilling a few drainage holes in each gutter section, then water can flow from the upper level to below. It’s also good for folks with bad backs, who … [Read more...]

Trout News

January 24, 2019 by Jim Brewer

In an effort to give everyone an equal shot, the Game Department announced it will publish several particular bodies of water in advance that will be stocked this spring, and the dates of that stocking. The exact times are not known but will likely be between 10 AM and 2 PM. Check out the streams and lakes below. Lake Thompson (Fauquier Co.) Fat Back and Bacon Grease

January 15, 2019 by Jim Brewer

After my father was declared Missing in Action during World War II, my mother brought her infant son home from the hospital to live with my grandmother, Mama Ida, her sister Pearl, my mom’s sister Jodi and Uncle Sidney, Mama Ida’s brother. I suppose we would have been considered poor, but everybody pitched in and somehow, we got by. Growing up, I remember that every dinner began with … [Read more...]

Winter Trout Fishing Memories

January 15, 2019 by Jim Brewer

I think Jimmie was 10 years old, maybe 11, but my son was my frequent and constant fishing companion. One February morning, we bundled up, put our gear in the back of 72 Chevy Pick Up and headed for Swift Run in Greene County. At that time, most of the fishing at Swift Run was done down near Stanardsville, where they stocked brown trout twice each spring. I had discovered, however, that … [Read more...]
