Heritage Oaks

April 18, 2019 by Jim Brewer

It’s my favorite course and I’ve played a lot of courses. It’s Heritage Oaks, a public golf course in Harrisonburg, and it’s fantastic. I played yesterday with Mike Perry and had one of my best rounds ever. When you enjoy a course and can relax, you play better – like Tiger did at Augusta. The course was simply beautiful. It was lush and green and in tip-top condition. The tee boxes were … [Read more...]

My Friend Red

April 18, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Sometimes, if you’re lucky, you can develop a relationship with the birds and animals that live in your yard. Since I’m the one who does the feeding, many come to know me as a friend, in a way. I have such a relationship with one male cardinal. He’s my friend, Red. This cardinal and his mate nested in an azalea bush in my front yard last year and perhaps the year before. But last year, as I … [Read more...]

Maple Glazed, Bacon Wrapped Carrots

April 18, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Nancy Jackson of Saluda said that the recipe of Laura’s Carrots last week in Cville Buzz reminded her of a carrot dish she just prepared. Maple Glazed, Bacon-Wrapped Carrots. Sounds good already. “Use large, whole carrots and cut them in half,” says Nancy. Wrap each carrot slice with a slice of bacon, drizzle maple syrup on them and bake at 375-380 for 20 minutes. Turn them over and drizzle … [Read more...]

Carl’s Ice Cream

April 18, 2019 by Jim Brewer

By Sherman Shifflet If you haven't stopped by Carl's Ice Cream in Fredericksburg, then by all means hop in your car, pick up a few friends and head in that direction. Anytime I'm in the Fredericksburg area, and even when I'm not so close, my car is programmed to take me to 2200 Princes Anne Street  for the best ice cream you've never eaten. Don't just take my word; ask anyone who has been … [Read more...]

George’s BBQ Sauce

April 18, 2019 by Jim Brewer

We were in Mooresville, NC last week on a short getaway to Lake Norman when I found myself at one of my favorite hangouts – the Food Lion. Food Lion, as you know, is based in Carolina and this is one of their flagship stores. I was there to pick up a few staples for dinner but, as always, I had to do a little poking around, especially in the “Sauce” section where I came across a product … [Read more...]

A Level V Master Angler

April 18, 2019 by Jim Brewer

There are lots of fishermen who fish their entire lives and never catch a single citation-sized fish. There are others who will maybe land a fish or two that exceeds the minimum citation weight or length and there are a handful of anglers who catch 6 or 8 citations for different species. But there is only one in all of  Virginia who has a caught a citation fish in all 25 official categories and … [Read more...]

The Corner Store Garden Shop

April 18, 2019 by Jim Brewer

There are only a handful of stores where I know I will be greeted and welcomed and that what ensues will always be a good experience. The Corner Store Garden Shop in Ruckersville is such a place. Garden Stores are super busy this time of the year and most don’t have the time or take time to stop and chat with customers and offer advice. I needed a little advice and I knew the store owners, the … [Read more...]

Drum and Flounder

April 18, 2019 by Jim Brewer

Flounder are starting to show up inshore. The best early season action usually occurs in the seaside inlets on the Eastern Shore. A few short flatties have already been caught inside Rudee Inlet. Remember, large baits catch large flounder. The first black drum were landed in the surf on Virginia’s Eastern Shore last week. Look for good catches to develop bayside near the Cabbage Patch, the … [Read more...]

A Drive Down Memory Lane

April 11, 2019 by Jim Brewer

A Boomer’s first love was likely his or her first car. It was one thing to drive the family sedan, but it was something else indeed to have your very own car. For most Boomers, that car was titled in the parents’ names, but if you had the keys, it was yours. My first car was a 1949 Pontiac two-door sedan. It was solid black with a little chrome here and there. I would not have been more pleased … [Read more...]
