Pre-Cut Aluminum Foil Sheets

November 19, 2020 by Jim Brewer

I ran into a neat product recently.  I had never seen it before - Reynold’s Pre-Cut Aluminum Foil Sheets. I have been buying pre-cut parchment paper for baking for quite a while, but these aluminum sheets are truly handy. Lots of times, you don’t need such a big piece of aluminum foul and it’s always the dickens to cut off the roll - usually tears away at the end, leaving you with odd shapes … [Read more...]

Another Opening Day

November 19, 2020 by Jim Brewer

By Sherman Shifflett Even as Old Man Time continues to creep up on me, I still get excited about the first day of regular hunting season. This year, November 14, 2020, was no different. It was more difficult crawling out of the rack, and I was not quite as chipper, but I got on with the program. I'm 78. Things would be different this year. My hunting buddy for the past 40+ years, Greg … [Read more...]

Jaybird Street

November 19, 2020 by Jim Brewer

Remember the lyrics from Rockin’ Robin? Recorded by Bobby Day in 1958, it spent 21 weeks in the Top 100, peaking at Number 2. So if you remember it, you are likely as old as I am. It went like this.   He rocks in the treetops all day long Hoppin' and a-boppin' and singing his song All the little birds on Jaybird Street Love to hear the robin go tweet-tweet-tweet   I have a … [Read more...]

Really Easy Pork Tenderloin

November 19, 2020 by Jim Brewer

It’s hard to screw up a pork tenderloin, easily the most succulent and tender cuts of pork. With a pork tenderloin, if it’s not raw or burned to smithereens, it’ll be good. Pork tenderloin and pork loin, though, are entirely two different types of animal. A pork tenderloin is the long, narrow, boneless cut of meat that comes from the muscle that runs along the backbone. A pork loin is wider and … [Read more...]

Notes From Capt. Cain

November 19, 2020 by Jim Brewer

Despite all of 2020’s problems, it was a good fishing year in NC overall. Some days were tough, but we also had many great days on redfish, flounder, tarpon and false albacore. With the amount of small redfish around this year and combined with the flounder closure, next year should offer even better fishing. We currently have a flounder season in NC now which lasts 6 weeks for recreational … [Read more...]

Striper Action Heating Up

November 19, 2020 by Jim Brewer

In Virginia waters, striper fishing has been excellent inside the Rappahannock River. Stan Cobb at Greentop says that multiple presentations are working now. Stretch baits, umbrella rigs rigged with 4-6 inch baits, lipless crankbaits, and jigging bucktails are productive. The Whitestone Bridge area has been very good, as have areas for several miles upriver. Anglers fishing the Hampton area of the … [Read more...]

The Law of the Cantaloupe Seed

November 12, 2020 by Jim Brewer

We have many laws governing our universe. There is the Law of Gravity, there is Einstein’s Law of Relativity, there is Newton’s Law of Motion and - of course – there is Brewer’s Law of the Cantaloupe Seed. What? You’ve never heard of Brewer’s Law of the Cantaloupe Seed. That’s only because of government-run schools. They don’t teach real science. The Law of the Cantaloupe Seed is well-proven … [Read more...]

“Leaf” Them Alone

November 12, 2020 by Jim Brewer

They do it every year. They fall off the trees. Leaves. Every single one, which means get out the rake and get to work. Or not? For the past few years I have eschewed the rake and leaf blower and cranked up my lawnmower instead. Not only is this far easier than raking and bagging, it’s better for your yard. By mowing a few times each fall the leaves are shredded into fine pieces where they … [Read more...]

The Cheerful House Finch

November 12, 2020 by Jim Brewer

I suppose my back yard is the Mecca for house finches. They are at my feeders throughout the day, every day, spring, summer, fall and winter. They never fly off for vacations. They stay planted in my yard. Late this summer, I assume right after several families hatched, we had 30 or more finches at a time fighting for a spot on my sunflower heart feeder. The little rascals also love to take baths … [Read more...]

Martin’s Grill

November 12, 2020 by Jim Brewer

There is a number of great places to get a hamburger in Charlottesville, but one of the best (and often overlooked) spots is Martin’s Grill at Forest Lakes. They are known for their hamburgers and they have them all the way from a single burger to a Quadzilla with 4 patties, and all cooked on a stove top grill. My understanding is that Ryan Martin,  the founder of Martin’s grill, once worked … [Read more...]
