Get Ready to Rumble

March 18, 2021 by Jim Brewer

Introducing…… In the black corner, we have “Rocky” Robin from Woodbrook in Charlottesville, defending his Featherweight title. “Rocky” has a wingspan 12-inches and comes in weighing a trim .17-pounds. In the red corner, fighting out of Hollymead, we have “Kid” Redbreast, a newcomer hoping to nest in the Brewer’s backyard. “The Kid” also weighs .17 pounds, but has a wingspan of 12.2 … [Read more...]

Miracle Grow

March 18, 2021 by Jim Brewer

I planted a couple rows each of spring onions and sweet peas in my new enclosed garden.  I call it La Cage Mahal, because it costs almost as much as the original Taj Mahal structure near New Delhi. But a miracle happened. The next day I looked out at my freshly tilled rows and they were still intact. Not a single onion bulb had been dislodged from its proper place and each and every pea was where … [Read more...]

Boo Hiss for Heritage Oaks

March 18, 2021 by Jim Brewer

We were on the 16th tee box in a spirited golf match at Heritage Hills in Harrisonburg when the young man from the Pro Shop appeared and said the carts needed to be in at 5:30 - and it was 5:30. That was good information, but information we never received.  I wouldn’t have booked at 1:30 tee time (the only one available) had I known. We normally complete our round in 4 hours, but we were placed … [Read more...]

Road Trip to Springdale Water Gardens

March 18, 2021 by Jim Brewer

It’s a spring ritual with me and Nancy - a ride across the mountain to Greenville and a visit to Springdale Water Gardens. Nancy has had a small lily pond (into which I snuck a few tadpoles and goldfish) for years. Water lilies are gorgeous when they bloom and we have even kept the small pond heated to keep the lilies alive through the winter. Then, last year we installed our genuine goldfish … [Read more...]

Saltwater Action

March 18, 2021 by Jim Brewer

By Dr. Ken Neill   Wes Blow and I left my house dark and early this morning. We were met by a very bright UFO which turned out to be a Space X rocket launch. Beautiful ride to the wreck and things started out fine. I caught 3 tog and a sheepshead while Wes caught some sea bass and an oyster toad. I did not say a thing, which those that have togged with me may not believe. Things like, “ … [Read more...]

Crappie are Turning On Everywhere

March 18, 2021 by Jim Brewer

Rappahannock River Crappie are available around brush piles in the creeks and on the main river. White perch, yellow perch and stripers are also in the lower river. Rappahannock River There has been excellent fishing for blue catfish in the lower tidal sections. Many of the big fish are being caught on cut shad and herring bait. Some of these fish are weighing in at over 30 pounds. Fair … [Read more...]

Camping and the Average Man

March 11, 2021 by Jim Brewer

During the course of the life of an average man there comes a time when he takes complete leave of his senses and does incredibly stupid things – like go camping. After rising to the top of the food chain and having access to things like heat pumps, wide screen TVs and multiple jet showers, some average men deem it desirable to forego the pleasantries of life and live among a cluster of … [Read more...]

The Masters Resolutions

March 11, 2021 by Jim Brewer

Everybody makes New Year’s Resolutions, usually on New Year’s Eve, but rarely kept. I make Masters resolutions, right before The Masters Golf Tournament in April. Since they didn’t have The Masters in April last year, it really screwed up my golf game. I had an awful year. Come to think of it, most of the years I play golf  are awful, but I digress. Each year, I try to make a resolution that … [Read more...]

Cage Free Vegetables

March 11, 2021 by Jim Brewer

Cage free eggs are all the rage these days. A kind and caring human wants to make sure all those little eggs are not under any stress and have been treated kindly. Otherwise, they might do a Humpty Dumpty and throw themselves off a wall or something. Most vegetables are also cage free – happy little vegetables grown in the wide open spaces – free to roam as they will. But not my … [Read more...]

Pumpkin Cream Pie

March 11, 2021 by Jim Brewer

Sound good? It is. And it’s fairly easy. Most everyone likes pumpkin pie, a staple at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Recently, I have made some cream pies and thought pumpkin cream might work. It did. Here’s how. For starters, do a graham cracker crust and make it yourself. The store-bought graham cracker crusts are certainly easy, but they don’t quite measure up. It’s really easy to make … [Read more...]
