On-Line Clearance at Lights Out

October 28, 2021 by Jim Brewer

As many know, I run a small outlet store for lighting in Ruckersville called Lights Out. We are the showroom outlet for Nancy B’s House of Lights. When items are discontinued, we bring them to Lights Out and put them on sale. We are currently having an On-Line Clearance and have lowered all our prices – some by up to 75%. This is a great way to swap out an old light you no longer want … [Read more...]

Catfish on the Way

October 28, 2021 by Jim Brewer

Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) Fisheries staff will be busy this fall stocking catchable channel catfish in more than 120 waters throughout the state. These stockings will begin during the last week of October and will continue through November. According to Brendan Delbos, the State Hatchery Superintendent, “The fall catfish stocking program is one of our most … [Read more...]

What a Pain!

October 21, 2021 by Jim Brewer

Look in the medicine cabinet of a modern family and you’ll find Neosporin and other balms and creams to treat wounds. No pain, just soothing comfort to treat a “boo-boo” on a child. But remembering back when Boomers were growing up, there were three medicines used to torture children – Iodine, Mercurochrome and Methylate. It’s hard to rate these three liquids from Satan in terms of … [Read more...]

Corn Maze and Pumpkins

October 21, 2021 by Jim Brewer

If you find yourself with nothing to do on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, buckle up the kids and head for Liberty Mills Farm in Somerset and explore the largest corn Maze in  Virginia. While you’re at it, take a wheelbarrow out into the pumpkin patch and hand select a big, fat pumpkin for Halloween. This year, Liberty Mills has 12 miles of paths and has designed four trails … [Read more...]

Million-Dollar Spaghetti

October 21, 2021 by Jim Brewer

Spaghetti is hard to beat. It’s easy to cook and everybody loves it. My only gripe with spaghetti is that every time I eat it, I gain weight. But how can you have just a little portion of spaghetti? I saw a recipe recently that looked interesting. They called it Million Dollar Spaghetti. I don’t know if it’s worth a million dollars, but it is both easy and delicious – almost a cross … [Read more...]

Humming Along

October 21, 2021 by Jim Brewer

Sometime last week, they took off. For months, they have been buzzing around out backyard flowers and our two feeders, but it was time to leave. Our resident hummingbirds are headed to Mexico. What interesting and beautiful creatures are these tiny birds. Hummingbirds live throughout North America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean Islands. They seek out habitat … [Read more...]

More Anaheim Peppers for the Future

October 21, 2021 by Jim Brewer

I bought a single Anaheim pepper plant from the Corner Store Nursery this spring. One of my other transplanted pepper plants died and I needed something to replace it. I had never heard of an Anaheim pepper, but the tag said it was a “hot” pepper and several in my family enjoy hot peppers. So, I decided to give it a try. It turns out that the pepper was not hot at all, at least when … [Read more...]

Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers

October 21, 2021 by Jim Brewer

Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers are so good that the local Emmet Street location has been grinding traffic to a halt on US 29. Cars waiting to drive through and order are backed up nearly to the stoplight at Hydraulic Road. There are sure a lot of “Caniacs” out there. For many, there is only one Fried Chicken Finger, and that comes from Raising Canes Chicken Fingers - and what a … [Read more...]

Striper Time

October 21, 2021 by Jim Brewer

Virginia’s rockfish season opened October 4th and will remain open until December 31. Anglers are catching them around bridge pilings, piers and under lights at night. Regulations allow one fish per angler per day with a 20-inch minimum and a 36-inch maximum length. Ocean charters are still successfully targeting Spanish mackerel and king mackerel. Some nice smoker kings were recently … [Read more...]

Squeezing Coins

October 14, 2021 by Jim Brewer

During the World War II, rubber and plastics were simply not available to consumers. But after the war, things changed. Needing to keep assembly lines open, manufacturers developed tens of thousands of new rubber, plastic, and fiberglass products. Among them was the rubber squeeze change purse. Every Boomer kid had one. It’s where we put the 10 cents for admission to the movies. It’s … [Read more...]
