Big Specks: Not Much Else

February 3, 2022 by Jim Brewer

It’s slow going on the saltwater scene. Bay water temps have plunged into the 30’s, but so far, so good. No fish kills have yet been reported because of cold water. A few speckled trout are biting as they can tolerate the cold water better than most species. Some puppy drum have also bundled up and are hitting. Some very nice sized specks are being tugged out of the Elizabeth River … [Read more...]

My Only Fly Fisherman

January 27, 2022 by Jim Brewer

For most of my life, fly fishing has been my passion. From the time I tied my first dry fly and delivered it to small brook trout on Swift Run, I have been hooked. I have spent countless hours pulling fly line through the air with a long leader and a small fly tagging along for the ride. I have caught trout, bass, panfish, stripers, bluefish, amberjack, speckled trout, and many other species. … [Read more...]

Yea For Harris Teeter!

January 27, 2022 by Jim Brewer

I shop at Harris Teeter on occasion, but not regularly. It’s not as convenient for me, and the prices seem higher. But I went there last week to check out their seafood. They often have great Argentine Shrimp and fresh flounder. The flounder looked good, so I bought it, then saw some breakfast sausage in their custom meat counter and bought a pound. Over in their hamburger display I … [Read more...]

Time to Consider DeerBusters

January 27, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Fellow gardeners, in a month and a half we’ll be planting mustard greens, lettuce and spring onions. The garden season is fast approaching. However - will this be the year you keep deer and varmints at bay, or will they once again come and mow your garden down? May I recommend a company called DeerBusters, a manufacturer of easy-to-assemble components to keep the deer out of your … [Read more...]

Chickadee Visits

January 27, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Other than the Hummingbirds of summer, he is the smallest bird to visit my yard. He is my Chickadee and every year I have a pair that nest in or near the yard. He is also fun to watch. We have just put one those see-through feeders on our den window so that Foster (our pet parakeet) can watch and try to speak to other birds. You should hear the racket that Foster makes when a bird … [Read more...]

Kitchen Islands Are Increasing In Size

January 27, 2022 by Jim Brewer

By Nancy B The kitchen is the heart of the home and Kitchen Islands often are utilized more than a kitchen table. In new homes many Islands are increasing in size and may be 12’ or longer and 3 to 5’ wide. Our kitchens saw a lot of us in the past two years. There are so many uses for our Islands other than cooking and dining. The Island has become the workspace for many of us working from home, … [Read more...]

Damned Good Cauliflower

January 27, 2022 by Jim Brewer

“Hot damn, we’re having cauliflower tonight!” You don’t hear that very often. Never, actually. Cauliflower is one of those things you’ll eat if you have to. It doesn’t really taste bad, but neither does grass. Cauliflower, though, is a healthy vegetable and it sure would be nice to be able to substitute it every now and then for a deadly baked potato with butter and sour cream. Fellow … [Read more...]

The Amazing Whitetop Laurel

January 27, 2022 by Jim Brewer

When I found out that my daughter Laura had rented a cabin in the western corner of Virginia and wanted to trout fish, I had one piece of advice. If it’s near Whitetop Laurel, fish there. It’s Virginia’s finest trout stream. Period. Whitetop Laurel Creek is in Washington County and runs through the small town of Damascus. It is the longest trout stream in Virginia and one of the richest … [Read more...]

  I’m Crying for Baseball

January 20, 2022 by Jim Brewer

There may be “No crying in baseball”, but I am crying for baseball. I’m ready for the season to start. Let’s play ball! As a lifelong sports fan, I am finding fewer and fewer sports teams and heroes to follow. The NFL turned me completely off when they seemingly condoned kneeling during the National Anthem but wouldn’t let a player kneel and pray after a touchdown – so they’re out. … [Read more...]

  News Papers and Trash

January 20, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Just five years ago, even if it snowed, I got my morning paper. My long-time friend and neighbor, Bob Branch, made the paper rounds. He had a Jeep and delivered the Daily Progress and Richmond Times Dispatch come rain or shine. Ten-inches of snow? It made no difference, Bob came. Likewise, my Trash Service – Time Disposal. They even came on Christmas Day if it fell on a Monday. But no … [Read more...]
