Batter Up!

May 12, 2022 by Jim Brewer

I heard those words the other day coming from my neighbor’s yard. There were kids in the next yard playing ball. Liam, age 7 or so, was the catcher, with a mask, a mitt and everything. Another kid stood at the plate, Casey at the bat. There was an actual baseball game going on, and there wasn’t a single adult out there. They were just kids, playing ball. These days, you’re more likely to see … [Read more...]

Playing Expensive Golf

May 12, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Like everything else, golf is getting more expensive. Chemicals, gasoline for the carts and increased labor costs for maintenance adds up, so courses are raising greens fees, but in my opinion, some courses may be pricing themselves out of the market and losing revenue. Case in point. Old Trail in Crozet is now $84 for 18 holes and a cart Mon-Thu, $90 on Friday and $104 on … [Read more...]

Roasted Zucchini and Parmesan

May 12, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Vegetables. Face it, they’re boring. But we must serve them along with the main dish. It’s required Cooking 101. In fact, some only serve vegetables. Vegans, you know. But I have a hard time with ame old, same old veggies. A few days ago, I bought some zucchini, as a change of pace, and I tried a new recipe - Roasted Zucchini and Parmesan. It was delicious, and it’s really … [Read more...]

Discouraging Grackles and Starlings

May 12, 2022 by Jim Brewer

My long-time friend, Harold Spangler in Charleston, loves his bluebirds and has been feeding them live meal worms. He has also been inadvertently feeding the starlings and grackles. They are eating him out of house and home. He asked my advice on keeping the bigger birds away. I discovered the secret a few years back – a domed feeder. The dome over the feeder bowl is adjustable and … [Read more...]

Freshwater Fishing Heating Up

May 12, 2022 by Jim Brewer

As the water heats up, so does the freshwater fishing in Virginia. At Lake Orange, bass and crappie are mopping up after their spawning duties and feeding heavily in shallow water. The walleye bite has picked up and nice bluegills and redear sunfish are moving to the bedding grounds. Bass’n in the tidal rivers is outstanding A bag weighing 24 pounds claimed first place in a recent … [Read more...]

A Peep Hole World

May 5, 2022 by Jim Brewer

(From inside a bluebird house)   “What’s it look like out there?” “I don’t know, Mom said stay low, till she gets back.” “What’s taking her so long? I’m starving.” “Wait. Here comes Dad and he’s got a mouth full of meal worms. Glad we live in the Brewer’s back yard. That guy must own a meal worm factory.” Gobble, gobble, gulp, gulp. “Wait Dad, Billy in … [Read more...]

Mexican Slaw

May 5, 2022 by Jim Brewer

I have been having fun with some Tex/Mex recipes – nothing fancy, stuff like Enchiladas, Tacos, Mexican Lasagna, and the like. I’m sure a real live Mexican would say, “What the hell is this? It’s not anything I’ve ever eaten or would eat.” But for those of us who the closest we ever get to Mexico is landing in Dallas, it’ll do. One thing that concerns me about cooking Mexican is … [Read more...]

Patience, My Dear

May 5, 2022 by Jim Brewer

It was about to kill me, but I have patiently waited to plant my summer veggies in my small garden until the first week of May. One of my gardening buddies, Bill Hitt, says to wait until after the last possible frost date, May 15, but I am trusting that Mother Nature will protect my eagerness. Another friend, Ed Morris, said that one year he was unable for some reason to plant … [Read more...]

Frog Update

May 5, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Going into last winter, we had three frogs. A bullfrog and two leopard frogs. Then, they sank out of sight, or else scurried beneath a pile of rocks until their body switch came back on. Being cold-blooded, frogs shut their systems down to practically nothing, so they can ride out freezing weather until the spring thaw. This spring, we have all the three frogs back from last year, … [Read more...]

Who Is Nancy B?

May 5, 2022 by Jim Brewer

By Nancy B   I have had customers ask me this question. They want to know if Nancy B is a real person or just a name I decided to use. Have you ever noticed how much people like to talk about themselves? I do and I also do. I thought I would tell you how I got into this business to begin with. Before our third child was born, we had a darling ladies and girl’s clothing business. … [Read more...]
