Best Buy: Day-Old Filets

September 15, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Shopping in grocery stores these days is like playing dodgeball with bulldozers. In almost every aisle, there is a barge loaded with individual containers as store employees select items for on-line orders. It’s a pain getting around those things, as they take up much of the aisle space, but I really feel sorry for those who let others pick out their food. They miss the best deals of all. Like … [Read more...]

The Filling Station in Amherst

September 15, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Some of the best eating establishments are often found in out-of-the-way and unexpected places – like The Filling Station in Amherst. Art Stiphel and I had played a round of golf at Winton, just outside Amherst. The hot dogs at their grill are really good, but for some reason the grill was not open that day. Art said he knew of a great spot in Amherst and off we went. The Filling Station is … [Read more...]

Bath Lighting Fixtures – Part 2

September 15, 2022 by Jim Brewer

By Nancy B In my last blog, I discussed lighting for bathrooms and explained lighting for vanities is either placed above the vanity and mirror or wall sconces can be placed on either side of the mirror. However, there is another type of lighting for the vanity. Illuminated mirrors. That’s right, illuminated mirrors. Now you might remember the old “Hollywood strips”. I sang and participated … [Read more...]

Killer Tuna Salad

September 15, 2022 by Jim Brewer

You can make good tuna salad with a couple cans of ordinary tuna fish. Or you can make Killer Tuna Fish Salad with StarKist Solid White Albacore in Vegetable Oil. The difference is like a Kia compact compared to a Mercedes Benz Convertible Roadster. There is really no comparison. Regular tuna fish, usually packed in water, is less than a buck for a small can, which is why many use … [Read more...]

Cobia Season Ended

September 15, 2022 by Jim Brewer

The Virginia cobia season ended on Sept. 15, but it has been another good one. The past 4 years, in fact, have been very good. From now on, it’s catch and release and there are still plenty of nice fish around – from the mouth of the bay to the mouth of the Rappahannock. Big red drum are still pulling line off Penn reels, especially the lower Bay. Lots of puppy drum have been active at … [Read more...]

1956 – It Was a Very Good Year

September 8, 2022 by Jim Brewer

We had lived in Lewisburg, WV for a year and by now I was becoming acclimated to the friendly little city. I had made lots of friends, I shot my first quail with a .410 shotgun and was fortunate to be young and alive in one of the greatest years of all time – 1956. In 1956, things didn’t cost much. The average price for a new house was $11,700, the average monthly rent was $88, a gallon of gas … [Read more...]

Oops!

September 8, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Too bad I don’t have an editor. I’m the first and last one to look at my articles and sometimes I go to sleep at the wheel. Like last week. I said in my article on the Ark Encounter that Williamstown, KY was 665 miles from Charlottesville. It’s not. It’s about 465 miles. But I was correct that it takes about 8 hours to get there. 465 miles is still a ‘fer piece. I also gave credit to Daniel … [Read more...]

Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars

September 8, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Kroger’s sends me coupons about once a month. Usually, it’s for something like 50c off a dozen eggs, or $1.00 off if you buy 2 cheeses or maybe 50c off on three avocados. But often, they offer a free box of Betty Crocker Cake Mix for Special Customers. The Cake Mix is not really a big deal since it’s only about a buck-fifty for a box, but I usually take advantage and take a free box home. This … [Read more...]

Timberwood Grill: Best Sammies in Town

September 8, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Sometimes you just want a good sandwich. Maybe one you don’t often eat at home. That’s when you head out to eat at a good sandwich joint. Years ago, it used to be Sloan’s. Boy did they ever had good Sammies. Today, it’s Timberwood Grill. When you’re talking sandwiches – burgers don’t count, and ordinary stuff like Chicken and Tuna Salad and Turkey Clubs you can easily make at … [Read more...]

A Computer Screen Flower

September 8, 2022 by Jim Brewer

I was in the back yard looking at a collage of high school reunion pictures when a Monarch Butterfly paid me a visit. The laptop computer screen was alive with color and the butterfly thought it was surely flowers. She – I think it was she – flew right into my lap and began bumping into the computer screen. When she bounced away, she came back again and again. Anything that colorful has … [Read more...]
