Winton Farm Golf Course

August 18, 2022 by Jim Brewer

We are blessed to have a number of nice golf courses in and near Charlottesville, with lots of options to tee it up. But many don’t consider a really nice course available to us just 40 miles south. Winton Farm Golf Course in Amherst. I had played it once, 5 or 6 years ago, and played it again last week. I remember the course as being pretty long for me, so I moved up in tee boxes and … [Read more...]

Bye, Bye Catbirds

August 18, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Pack up all my cares and woe, here I go, winging low Bye, bye, catbirds   Yep. Catbirds. They’ve skipped town. I feel used in a way. They show up in March, two pair every year. They sing beautiful songs, then camp out at my suet feeder and peck away at my C & S Peanut logs. They eat lots themselves and they especially enjoy feeding the rich suet to their young. With a … [Read more...]

No Mo’ Corn Silk

August 18, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Loyal reader and ace Realtor in Rappahannock Country, Nancy Jackson (nancy@michaelmarketingand realestate.com), wrote last week that there is more than one was to skin a cat – and an ear of corn. I wrote that one expert said to pull the husk and silk off from the top, then use a toothbrush and scrub the ears up and down to remove the silk. Nancy does this: Cut the tail end of the corn off- wrap … [Read more...]

What a Boost!

August 18, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Covid. Don’t worry. Our fearless leaders have it under control. In fact, the President of Pfizer who has had all the possible shots and boosters there could possibly be, was pleased to announce that he had only contracted Covid four times. Imagine, if he hadn’t had all his doses, he might have got Covid 5 or 6 times! It’s important to get all those shots and boosters, even though you … [Read more...]

Wow! What a Flounder!

August 18, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Summer is about over, but the fishing is just getting started. It’s flounder time in the Bay, big flounder time. The flatties are now fattening up on the countless schools of spot that are in the Bay waters. The flounder above was caught on the Paige II with Captain Craig Paige, one of the best flounder guides in Tidewater. The best action has come from the CBBT, the Cell, artificial reefs, and … [Read more...]

Penny Candy

August 11, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Most people these days won’t stoop down to pick up a penny in the parking lot and they usually donate any extra pennies to the cup beside the cash register. Some even suggest doing away with pennies entirely since they are considered a nuisance. But Boomers didn’t consider a penny a nuisance. To us they were nuggets of gold and what could we ever do with a couple shiny pennies. After … [Read more...]

Corn Silk Be Gone

August 11, 2022 by Jim Brewer

Ahh! Sweet corn on the cob. The stores have the fresh ears stacked on end tables now, and it has been a great year for corn. Shuck the corn, remove the silk, and grill it, steam it, boil it, or zap it in the microwave and you are eating delicious, fresh corn on the cob. But. Getting the silk off is sometimes a problem and an otherwise appetizing fresh ear of boiled corn looks not … [Read more...]

Rats!

August 11, 2022 by Jim Brewer

They are in my yard. Worse. They’re in my garden. Early this week, they snatched every single baby tomato off my vines. Let the Rat Wars begin! Apparently, rats are making their rounds all over Charlottesville. I subscribe to Next Door, a community web site, and several people have posted pictures asking, “What kind of squirrel is this?” Not squirrels. Rats. Common gray rats with … [Read more...]

Hunting Mushrooms

August 11, 2022 by Jim Brewer

A Typical Oyster Mushroom   I remember as a boy going with Daddy to take our bird dogs for a walk in late August and September. It gave the dogs much needed exercise and allowed us to take inventory of any new quail coveys. What I most remember about those walks is mushrooms. We would often happen upon a stand of spores and Daddy put many of them in a sack he carried just for that … [Read more...]

Red (Lexington-style) Slaw

August 11, 2022 by Jim Brewer

In Lexington BBQ country, if you served up some white cole slaw to go with your BBQ sandwich, you would be tarred and feathered then tarred again. Everyone, including Andy Griffith, Gomer and Aunt Bee, know that the only slaw that goes with BBQ is Red Slaw, often called Lexington Slaw. The spicey slaw really goes with lots of southern-style foods including catfish and fried chicken. … [Read more...]
