Carrying The Ball

May 11, 2023 by Jim Brewer

The picture above is of Jalen Brunson, an NBA player dribbling the basketball. Except he’s not dribbling, he is clearly carrying the ball, which is illegal, or used to be. When I played basketball as a 9th grader, if you didn’t have your hand absolutely on top of the ball when dribbling, you were called for a violation. Later, as a referee, if I saw a played with his hand on the side or under the … [Read more...]

A Broccoli Frittata

May 11, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Frittata. Sounds fancy, doesn’t it?  But it’s not hard to prepare. I did one last night and it was delicious. Frittata is an egg-based Italian dish. The word frittata roughly translates into “fried”. It’s like a crustless Quiche, which means it’s less fattening and easier to put together. The ingredients which can go into a Frittata are practically limitless. Use any vegetable or combination … [Read more...]

Little Adder Hummingbird Mint

May 11, 2023 by Jim Brewer

We lost our one-year-old Hummingbird Mint plant to that frigid cold snap last Christmas. A hardy perennial, it didn’t survive that week of artic-like weather. This spring, we immediately searched for and found another and it’s in the ground now. Fellow gardeners, this is a plant you want to have. Though it attracts both butterflies and hummingbirds, we wanted it near our fishpond to draw in … [Read more...]

A Thrush at the Feeder

May 11, 2023 by Jim Brewer

This was a first-time event in my backyard. I saw a thrush at one of my feeders. The normally reclusive birds generally stay in the way back, near the hedges, but the lure of a large sunflower heart cake was too much for the lovely brown bird to resist. Though the bird is commonly called a thrush, its real name is a Brown Thrasher. The generally reclusive bird occasionally makes its way onto … [Read more...]

Digital Coupon BS

May 11, 2023 by Jim Brewer

I was in Kroger’s, and we were low on butter. But have you seen the recent prices of butter? While eggs have finally come down to respectable prices, butter has shot up. I think Kroger’s had their brand of butter at $4.49 a pound. That’s $1.12 a stick! But then I saw another counter display of butter that was $3-something a pound, but only if you had a digital coupon and the Kroger … [Read more...]

Outer Banks Blues

May 11, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Fishing is great now on the Outer Banks, where the big news are the big blues. Bluefish being caught both in the surf and back in the sounds. Many fish caught by surf fishermen are exceeding 12 pounds and some nice blues up to 6-pounds are biting in the sounds. In addition to bluefish, puppy drum, sea mullet, black drum, speckled trout, and a few big stripers are also coming to net. There are … [Read more...]

Becoming a Bird Dog Breeder

May 4, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Macon was a beautiful animal, a graceful English setter with feathery white fur and only a hint of orange. He was a big male in keeping with a long line of registered English Setters I have owned out of Grouse Ridge Will. I had a friend with a female setter, which happened to be coming in heat. To the best of our knowledge, neither of these dogs had ever been with another dog, if you … [Read more...]

Waterfront Property

May 4, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Maybe the best investment we have ever made was when we installed our small goldfish pond in our backyard three years ago. We have since enjoyed countless hours beside our “waterfront” property. Having a retreat like this is a true bonus for a homeowner. And it’s not that difficult to install one. Last weekend, we made a visit to Springdale Water Gardens in Greenville to pick up a few … [Read more...]

A Snow-White Visitor

May 4, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Monday, I was at the kitchen window and saw what appeared to be a white piece of paper blowing on the ground in the back, where I scatter birdseed. Upon closer observation, the paper turned out to be a bird, about the size of a bluebird. But it wasn’t a bluebird, it was a white bird and I’m not sure what kind of bird it was. I peered through my binoculars, but I couldn’t make out its … [Read more...]

“Dogging” It at Sam’s Hot Dog Stand

May 4, 2023 by Jim Brewer

I found myself in the Shenandoah Valley around lunch time last Saturday. My timing was perfect because when I passed through Stuart’s Draft, there was a Sam’s Hot Dog Stand along Rt. 340. I ordered 2 all-beef franks, a bag of chips and a Pepsi and it was the tastiest $6 I’ve ever spent. I adore Sam’s Hot Dogs. I think Sam’s started in their little hole in the wall on Main Street in … [Read more...]
