Some Assembly Required

May 18, 2023 by Jim Brewer

When I have little or nothing to do, I often pay Mr. Amazon a visit and see what new and improved gizmos I can add to my collection. Earlier this spring, I saw a Cucumber Trellis that I simply could not live without. This six-foot tall piece of heavy-duty garden equipment would allow me to plant several hills of cukes on each side of the trellis, and of course the vines would then scale … [Read more...]

Landscape Lighting Design

May 18, 2023 by Jim Brewer

By Nancy B   At Nancy B’s House of Lights, we help provide landscape lighting design for residential properties in Charlottesville and Albemarle. Properly installed landscape lighting can provide a safe and well-lit entrance to your home, while also enhancing the beauty of your landscaping. The first step in installing landscape lighting is to consult with an electrician, who can … [Read more...]

A Caramel and Ritz Delight

May 18, 2023 by Jim Brewer

I dearly love Ritz Crackers. Give me a box of Ritz and a jar of Jif Peanut Butter and I’m good to go. I also have a weakness for Caramel anything. When my sweet tooth starts acting up, I’ll often get a big bowl of vanilla ice cream, drizzle it with caramel syrup and love life. So, when I saw this recipe for Caramel Ritz Icebox Dessert, it immediately found a way into my cookbook. This is one of … [Read more...]

A Berry Good Time at Critzer Farm

May 18, 2023 by Jim Brewer

There were so many cars backed up on Rt. 151 that Critzer Family Farm in Nelson County had to open their gates a half-hour early. Folks had come early and were lined up to pick strawberries. Nancy and I came to gather enough berries to make her world-famous Strawberry Jam and we worried that all those folks ahead of us would mow down all the strawberries before we got there. But not to worry, the … [Read more...]

Sea Bass Time

May 18, 2023 by Jim Brewer

The black sea bass season reopened May 15th and runs through July 6th. Don’t w miss this opportunity to catch some jumbo-sized fish. The Triangle Reef is a popular spot with plenty of sea bass. They will bite squid, crab, fresh cut fish, clam strips, shrimp, or diamond jigs. Flounder fishing at Rudee and Lynnhaven inlets is picking up. Some nice keepers have been caught, mostly in the 16- to … [Read more...]

A Hot Crappie Bait

May 18, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Berkley Power Baits are the real thing. They are proven fish-catchers. But they don’t last long. If you unseal a bag, they turn into concrete by the next season, so you must replenish your stock on a regular basis. I had arranged a crappie fishing expedition a few weeks back and needed some Power Bait jigs, but Wal-Mart was out of stock. The only Power Barits they had were 5-packs of Pre-Rigged … [Read more...]

Summer Camp

May 11, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Summer is fast approaching, meaning modern children will be busier than ever with activities galore. It’s mind boggling to try and appreciate all the things in store for today’s kids. It wasn’t always like that. Boomers look back and remember that when school let out, if you didn’t play Little League baseball, you were sentenced to a summer of Scrabble, Clue and Monopoly games. Unless, … [Read more...]

Laura Meets Harry Murray

May 11, 2023 by Jim Brewer

It’s come full circle. The man who most influenced my love of fly fishing (and subsequent careers as a sport shop owner and outdoor writer) has now touched the life of Laura, my fly-fishing daughter. In the late 60’s and early 70’s, fly shops were as scarce as possums that looked both ways before crossing a road. Yet, that’s when I caught a severe case of fly fishing and fly-tying … [Read more...]
